I'm glad you have such an understanding mother. The only troubles I have in my family for being gay are my grandparents, who uninvited me to christmas and a birthday party for my grandmother. It can still hurt when other people say it'd be ok for you but not their kids. Its a very weak way of covering up that either they are against it or they don't care about you.
