    Winslow dogs

I've talked a lot about the stray dog problem in this little town I live in. There are too many dogs and not enough caring owners. I took a walk a couple months back and got some pics of the stray dogs and neglected dogs in a 4 block radius of my house. Only 4 blocks and this is what I found.

This old dog has been around for years. Not sure where he belongs. He's not neutered.

The dog on the right has been neutered and adopted out since this pics has been takin. The dog on the left is the mother of the pups I have at home. She is obviously still intact.

This big guy's name is Ugly...That is really what his owner calls him. He just walks around town...He is not neutered.

After this pic was takin I never saw this dog again. Don't know what happend to it.

This big fat dog is owned. He has another portly dog friend. He is not neutered and is never contained.

This is a very common sight around where I live. Hunting beagles are not considered pets. Their dog houses are nothing more that tarps stapled to a wooden frame and don't help keep them from the wind and rain.

This hound puppy is owned. She is never contained. She also lives with a Siberian Husky, a beagle dog and a mixed breed black dog. They are all tied up to dog houses except for her.

This is the hound puppy again with a chihuahua mix. This chihuahua mix has since then been neutered and lives with my friend.

This dog is a stray. He's been around forever and everyone hates him. He's always starting fights, digging in your trash or hanging around females in heat. He is not neutered.

More in next post...yeah, there's more.

This dog is a pain in the butt for the same reasons at the above dog. He is also not neutered.

This dog is a stray. He is not neutered. Behind him right outside the pic is a rottie tied to a dog house. Poor thing has a skin condition I think. He is missing some fur.

This little scotty was owned by the people I rescued Corinna's Tyson from. They decided they no longer wanted him and he's now a stray. He's a cute little guy.

Here's one I am very upset about. These people started out with two dogs. A male and a female. They keep having pups and they keep them all. I have no idea how many they have exactly, but it's a lot. They keep most of them in this little homemade pen.

There are 4 of these blue dogs. Their shelter is obviously NOT really shelter. They are not spayed or neutered because about twice a year there are puppies running around out there.

This little terrier dog is not spayed. I've talked to the owners. His shelter is a door propped up against the wall. He is a desperate need of a bath and a grooming.

I know just the sight of some of these dogs makes you just want to call the police. That just isn't an option here. Our two police officers in town couldn't care less about these dogs or their conditions. That's why I take it upon myself to help as many as I can. It's just a lot harder than you'd think when you don't have help.

No, there is no animal control. There is a no-kill shelter in the next town, but they won't help us. They say the Winslow dogs are too much trouble for them. Myself and some others have made efforts and had petitions signed to get one, but not enough people care. We did have a small fenced area with four kennel runs we used as a pound for a while. The girls running the place asked the town for money to help spay/neuter some dogs and help feed them. The town officials got upset and shut us down. We are back to square one and nowhere to keep stray dogs we pick up. Me and three other women take in some of thee dogs if we have room and get them spayed/neutered and find them homes. We just can't keep up with all of them.

I had no idea where Winslow, Indiana was and I had to look it up.

Since this is such a small town, you would have to contact your State
Representative to launch a complaint about lack of animal care facilities
to serve your area. It's pretty bad that so many lack even basic care.

Here another pic I found. This poor guy breaks my heart. I've talked about him on here...

This dog is 10yrs old...I talked to his owner last year and offered to bathe and cut his mats out for her. She was an elderly woman. She acted like I was crazy. I offered to give her another cord to put this dog on as he can reach the road on the chain he's on.

Yeah, Winslow is VERY small. We did contact the state last year. We were told every county has to have a humane society for strays to go. The no-kill shelter in the next town that won't take our dogs is in our county so they won't enforce anything. We are stuck. All I'm aware of that I can do is keep helping as many of these dogs as I can. I don't know what else I can do. Out petition was never taken serious and the county just laughed and rolled their eyes when it was presented to them. Our county is relatively poor and they say they can't afford to build and staff a humane society. Even after I offered to run it for free.

Please don't give up entirely. If the next county is supposed to help &
doesn't, tell that to the State Rep for your area. Let him or her know that
local PD is not set up to help with animals & This is a county wide problem.

Most State Reps are very good at answering their letters & hearing from
those they represent. It's worth a try anyway. Good luck with this.

Maybe you could make more efforts to transport them out of the area, or get them online for adoption in other areas. I don't know if truckers come by but there is a website where truckers run trains for homeless dogs. If I ever had the money I would come to areas like yours myself and bring dogs back to where I live and the chances of them being adopted would be much greater. I had wanted to start doing this with my sister in TN but she had to move back here.

lizbud, I'm not giving up. I just don't know what else to do. I'll try and get in contact with the state rep again.

IRescue542, I wish there were more people like you that are willing to help bring in strays from other areas. I hope you someday get to help homeless dogs.

Can you start your own non-profit, private adoption group? Or can you work in conjunction with one? Like, start your own chapter? That is very sad; I had a hard time making it through the entire roll of pictures
