Sept. 27, 2008(CBS/AP) A conservative columnist who welcomed Sarah Palin's entry in national politics now says she's proven to be a dud, and called on her to step aside as John McCain's running mate.

Kathleen Parker, writing in the National Review Online, says her "cringe reflex is exhausted" after watching the Alaska governor stumble through TV interviews and it's become clear to her that Palin is out of her league.

"No one hates saying that more than I do," Parker writes. "Like so many women, I've been pulling for Palin, wishing her the best, hoping she will perform brilliantly. I've also noticed that I watch her interviews with the held breath of an anxious parent, my finger poised over the mute button in case it gets too painful. Unfortunately, it often does."

Palin, new to national politics, boosted Republican presidential nominee John McCain in polls and excited the party's core conservatives when he chose the first-term governor for his ticket.

Some of that shine has since worn off in polls.

Parker said she thought Palin was a "refreshing feminist of a different order" when she joined the ticket, but it's become clear she doesn't know enough about economics or foreign policy to be president should that become necessary in a McCain administration.

Writes Parker:

"Palin filibusters. She repeats words, filling space with deadwood. Cut the verbiage and there’s not much content there. Here’s but one example of many from her interview with Hannity: “Well, there is a danger in allowing some obsessive partisanship to get into the issue that we’re talking about today. And that’s something that John McCain, too, his track record, proving that he can work both sides of the aisle, he can surpass the partisanship that must be surpassed to deal with an issue like this.”

When Couric pointed to polls showing that the financial crisis had boosted Obama’s numbers, Palin blustered wordily: “I’m not looking at poll numbers. What I think Americans at the end of the day are going to be able to go back and look at track records and see who’s more apt to be talking about solutions and wishing for and hoping for solutions for some opportunity to change, and who’s actually done it?”

Parker suggests that Palin could bow out for "personal reasons," such as to care for her infant son: "No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first."

Parker wasn't the only national Review writer to call for a shake-up in the McCain campaign. Kathryn Jean Lopez wrote that Palin is not coming off at her best in interviews, and notes that in keeping Palin on a tight media leash the campaign is potentially hurting the ticket more:

" If Sarah Palin is John McCain’s secret weapon, let her go, whoever is holding her back. And, frankly, if it turns out that the 'authentic' Palin of rallies and the Republican convention is just good speech delivery in a woman with some good spirit, I want to know that sooner rather than later. (Mitt’s still available … "

I define padding as lying. I did not know that telling the truth is so nuanced.

Why would she think she has to tell the truth? What an interesting...and sad...comment. Your rationale for her lying is..."because Obama has no real experience it is okay for her to lie." Wow.

I can clearly see that you are against lying. Just for fun, I'd like you to have a look at my real life credentials. For the record, I have no bio or resume. I've been gainfully employed or self employed for 30 years and have never had to present a resume. I run a sole proprietorship and an S corporation.
Here's what mine could say:

Biography:
Extensive professional musical performance Overseas and Worldwide. ( I worked on a cruise ship for 12 years-having been to over 100 port of call in over 60 countries- I was performing and it wasn't in the U.S., so where was it? I was technically IN the foreign country at the time)

...I have international clientele for arranging music (yes, the vast majority in the U.S. and Canada and one guy from Australia)

No lies here.


Now for the S corp.

MDF, Inc. (this is not the actual name of my S corp, and it is coincidental if I am using a real company name for my purposes here, it is unintentional and I apologize)

If you disregard the parenthetical realities, it sounds pretty good, and is completely truthful.

Resume:

Position:President of MDF, Inc. from 2005 to date. (I am the only officer and employee)
Majority stockholder in the corporation. (there is one one share of stock-and I have it)
Duties: to oversee the day to day business of the company (I oversee myself-loading my gear in the car)
and to manage the staff. (which is only myself)
Under my leadership the company has realized expansive growth over recent years. Revenues have quadrupled from 2005 to 2006. (not difficult- I was only in business one month of 2005) MDF has acquired financing (I gave my company a loan) new assets and facilities under my leadership. I have also been in charge of marketing and advertising. (I got some business cards and magnets) MDF has been a part of many successful joint ventures under my leadership (I worked with other contractors)
MDF has realized profitability and success due to my leadership skills.

I realize that this is an amatuerish attempt at writing a resume, like I said, I know nothing about resumes, I've never had one.
But, the point is you can make something sound really good, and still be truthful.
It was said that padding is lying. I padded the heck out of this and didn't lie.

Now, about Sarah Palin.
Can you tell me, in the video, exactly where she lied? What was untruthful and not a matter of opinion?

Palin was just trying to pad her resume. Just like every other resume or bio I've ever seen, from anybody about anything. It didn't strike me as funny, just weak.

It's like this. Earlier this week on a flight from London to New York a passenger became sick. The plane was diverted to Dublin Ireland.

If Ms. Palin was on that plane and said she had been to Ireland would that be "padding" or "lying"?

You ask how I would determine if an applicant was lying/padding. I would ask her what she saw, where she went, how long she was there.

And bonus points for "What about Bill Clinton lying." Back to everyone else does it so it is okay" argument?

As some prominent conservatives begin to raise the question of whether Sarah Palin should remain on the Republican presidential ticket – and others call for her to be given more public exposure in a bid to reverse falling poll numbers – the McCain campaign is bringing the Alaska governor to John McCain’s Sedona ranch for several days of intense debate prep.

Senior campaign advisor Steve Schmidt and other top officials met Palin in Philadelphia Sunday night, and are traveling with her and McCain to a Columbus, Ohio event Monday morning. The group then heads to Arizona.

The original plan was for Palin to prepare in St. Louis, where the vice presidential debate will be held Thursday. Instead, she has already been preparing in a Philadelphia hotel for four days with advisors. She will now get ready for the debate at McCain’s rustic creek-side home — what a top aide calls "debate camp."

The aide, who's part of the team prepping Palin, tells CNN they decided to take her to debate camp there because it is an "invigorating and enjoyable place to prepare for Thursday."

"SP [Sarah Palin] loves it, and has her kids and Todd coming," wrote the aide in an e-mail, and that "John McCain himself came up with the idea.”

Late last week, in the wake of a widely-panned interview with Katie Couric of CBS News, some prominent conservatives who had supported Palin’s vice presidential bid, including National Review columnist Kathleen Parker, suggested she step down before the election.
