Hubby and I have started construction!!! Woohoo!!!! Hubby also found me a local Rat Breeder!! Yay!! I am so excited!!! I am hoping to have at least one rat by the weekend!!

We actually made out realy well!! Hubby has less work than innitially thought!! We found a very nice bookshelf, pretty much identical to what we were gonna build. It also already has the two storage cupbords on the bottom! All we have to do is build the two doors fot the top, and cut holes in the shelves for the Ramps!! It is also very nicely made, and solid wood! I love it!!

    Congrats!

It will be easier if you get at least two rats at first both on you guys and the rats. If they have a buddy then the move is less stressful and then you don't have to worry about introductions and the intro's going bad.

Good Idea!! I will definitely be getting at least two then. Hubby is working on setting up a visit for me to see the breeder. I have met her a couple of times, but never knew she was a rat breeder! I guess hubby kept that part from me, cause he knew I would want some!! LOL!!!

Splendid! I am excited for you that you will finally experience being a mum to a couple of rats. They are definitely one of the most rewarding rodents you could own (at-least that is is what I think ).
    Congratulations!

Don't forget to seal the wood well or to line it with some sort of plastic. I would do both. Use a sealant and then use plastic drawer liners with the sticky back to do the entire inside. Otherwise you work will be in the garbage in a few months.

What are the dimensions of the bookshelf? You don't want it to be thinner than 12" minimum, the rats shouldn't have to bend their necks or tail to fit when they turn sideways or they can end up with permanent issues.

The wood is already sealed, and we are also lining it with Shelf liner. The shelves are 16" deep, and range from 14-18 inches high.

We got the doors installed yesterday evening. I alo sewed together some Rat hammocks out of fleece. Today we will be cutting the holes in the shelves and installing the ladders. Besides adding toys and such, we should be done today. Pics will be added later.

Yay for you! Oh and dollar stores are a rat owners best friend for cheap toys, lol.

That is incredible! You are going to have a couple VERY lucky ratties! Remember that ratties love to chew and they WILL find a way out if there is one!
    Owned by two little pastries!

I am sure they will have loads of fun in there! If you give them plenty to do then you shouldn't have to worry about bored rats wanting out, lol.
