I'd pick the maple, they are the least messy and attract the least insects. The gum tree is considered kindof a nusiance tree.

Well today was the day & the tree selected was a Chinquapin Oak.A crew
came out this morning to do the planting.I think the squirrels will love the
    acorns.

    HUH?

When did an OAK enter the forest?
Don't think an Oak was listed in the possible three choices first offered ...
Did the city get a "bargin" on Oaks?

Only drawback with an Oak is it's a *s*l*o*w* growing tree.

But it WILL be a Pretty Tree!!

Phred, Maybe they ran into a sale. Anyway, my next door neighbor also
took them up on the offer & they got a oak too. It's a different variety with
different shaped leaves. Think it's called a swamp Oak. When I looked up my tree it said grows from 2ft to 4 ft per year. It's a little over
    6ft right now. We'll see.

    Nice fast growing

For a nice fast growing tree that does not get too big, try a Russian Black Olive. Sub divisions use them a lot for the lovely foliage and the grow fast, without getting too big.
