WASILLA, Alaska (AP) — The engagement is off for the teenage daughter of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and the father of her baby.

Levi Johnston told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he and Bristol Palin mutually decided “a while ago” to end their relationship. The 19-year-old Johnston declined to elaborate.

Eighteen-year-old Bristol Palin says in a statement to the AP that she is “devastated.”

The two are the parents of a boy named Tripp, who was born Dec. 27.

Sarah Palin revealed her daughter’s pregnancy days after being named John McCain’s running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

In an interview that aired on Fox News last month, Bristol Palin said her fiance saw the baby every day and described him as a “hands-on” dad.

The two had said they were considering a summer wedding.

I'm sure "a while ago" meant as soon as mommy lost the election.

I'm glad he is still an active part of the child's life though.

marriage or not I'm glad he's still being daddy.

    Before actually.

Edit: By Mommy, do you think Sarah is the mom of Tripp and not Bristol?

Edit: Looks like it actually just 2 weeks or so ago.

Not a surprise, but I hope the baby will have a stable life anyway. They are young, and you never know where life is going to take you. At least the baby will have an uncle to grow up with.

They're kids and their hormones got the better of them. It happens every day and if they were anyone else, this wouldn't even be newsworthy.

IT's fodder for scandal and laughter when it happens to other people.
Tragedy when it visits our own porch.

    Who really cares?

You are so right. It is so simple to go on the pill. How many lives would be saved each year? Lives ruined because the baby was born and lives ruined because it was not.

Like Brittany Spear's little sister? That seemed quite newsworthy.

I don't think it is the "act" as yes, it sadly happens all the time.

    It is the hipocracy.

I'm not sure I get your meaning. What is it that she did that appears to be hypocritical? Was she campaigning for abstinence? If so, I totally missed that. I didn't think Britney Spear's sister's pregnancy was newsworthy either.

I don't know about ms Spears but I'd say Bristol's preganancy was pretty hypocritcal. Pretty sure Sarah P was pushing to teach "abstinance only" in schools.

Not trying to generalize but a lot of teenagers are more sexual than their parents realize. If your daughers are pure in mind and body, then I praise your parenting skills. Sadly a lot of parents these days are too busy to pay attention to what their kids are doing. And some just don't care. I had a friend who told her daughter "just let me know when you're gonna start doing that" and then put her daughter on birth control pills when she did.

I do not remember the name of the "pundit" on Fox...Spears parents are bad parents because their teenage daughter got pregnant. Palin teenage daughter gets pregnant - he said it is a private family matter and should not be discussed. That is my meaning.

If she attended a school that teaches birth control including abstinence maybe she would have known what to do to avoid pregnancy.

I do think unwed teenage pregnancy is a big deal. Children born to teenage mothers are more likely to live in poverty and be subject to other disadvantages. I have thought of working in a program to help teenage girls see the advantages of NOT getting pregnant.

When my sister gave birth to a daughter I told my sister if the daughter remained a virgin until she was 21 I would pay her college.

Do I know if she remained a virgin? No. But there was one way I would have known for sure she was NOT. (I don't buy the virgin birth story...) and that was my objective.

She is a college graduate and I did pay.

And you bet your sweet bippy I think it would have been VERY different if it had been Chelsea Clinton. Fox Network et al would have been falling ALL over themselves talking about what terrible parents the Clintons were and about permissive liberals.

As Fox did when the Spear girl was pregnant. Remember???

Nah... it's all just a witch hunt. pregnant FAMOUS teens are the perfect target.

I'm tired of the whole "bump watch" nonsense you always see on the cover of US magazine or people.

I don't care if some celebrity is pregnant... let them be pregnant in peace.

I'm sure none of us had a camera crew following us around and if I got knocked up at 16 no one would give a flying fig... it SURE wouldn't be newsworthy because I'm not a household name.

Wish they would leave these poor girls alone... they already have enough to deal with being pregnant teens.
