We'z HERE ~~ Publik Entrance to The Dam and Piknik Area ~
(And very Popular Sled-Riding Hill - the Backside of the Dam!)
BERLIN DAM (1943) ~ Purdy "BIG", Huh?
Our FEETZ are about 40 feetz BELOW the Lake's Water Level!
You're *watching* "1,486 cfs" (1,486 Cubic Feet of water per SECOND)
being discharged on the downstream side of the Dam into
the Mahoning River. Not anywhere near a "Record" outflow;
but that's a LOTTA Water!!
How MUCH wadder iz dat? ~~ 1,486 cfs is the same as:
11,000 Gallons per SECOND or
664,000 Gallons per MINUTE or
46 TONS of water per SECOND or
2,800 TONS of water per MINUTE! ~~ wow!
At that 1,486 cfs Flow Rate, the Level of Berlin Lake
should DROP by 11 Inches over a 24 hour period.
The Corps of Engineers "stored" the water that fell as RAIN two
weeks ago to prevent major flooding in the communities "below" the Dam.
There WAS some flooding along the Mahoning River - but a lot LESS than
there would have been without the Dam to reduce the river's flow!!
NOW the Corps must "dump" the Lake into the river to lower the "pool" (level)
of Berlin Lake to "make room" for the melting snow and Spring rains.
Here you can see the "outflow" from THREE of the huge "Tainter Gates"
that are partially open and allow water to flow over the TOP of
the Spillway and rush down the back side of the dam;
and the outflow through the Dual "Ring Jets" (they work like a
garden hose nozzle) that discharge their water via 3 foot diameter
pipes that run through the dam.
... LOTTA Wadder headed towards the Ohio River!!
The "West Tower" of Berlin Dam...
Houses all the control panels for operating the Gates, Valves,
and monitoring equipment; and the stairwell that goes down 100 feet
into the "Gallery" where the Ring Jets are located.
(Dad took da Fire Guyz "down there" onna Safety Tour...
goin DOWN wuz EEZIE; climbin back UP wuz a different story!)
Jest a "few" more >>>
