    Kia's off to the whitecoats

Just a routine checkup of sorts. She'll be tested for heartworm and I'll be getting her Hartguard and Frontline.

I'm also having her ears looked at. She cut them and she won't let them heal. Kia's become an expert at taking her cone off.

Typically I get her heartworm tested in April or May but her routine vaccination checkup is in June, though I'm going to find out if I can get it all done today.

Good luck with Kia's vet visit.

Just wondered about the yearly heartworm test. My vet only
checks the dog once, before they start the Hartgard. He never
checks again, because the dog doesn't stop taking the medicine.
Do you think that sounds safe? Maybe different vets use different methods?

just had my Clover dog in for

a removal of a baby tick from the lower eye lid. Geesh what a place to get one. It's tick season. Frontline is killing a few but it doesn't get all of them.

Liz, that's the same for my vet.

Good luck Kimmy and Kia! {{HUGS}} to both of you.

Since June is right around the corner, Kia got her full physical.

She's heartworm free and looking good. The sores on her ears are from her allergies. Dr. Kuschel perscribed an ointment for me to put on her ears twice a day. Hopefully that'll do the trick. I need to remember to give Kia Benedryl too.

    She's gained 3 pounds too. She's 53 lbs. now.

    Liz,

Dr. Kuschel likes to take blood and run a test to make sure there are no heartworms before putting the dogs on a preventative. Kia is only on Hartguard from May to December this year. Last year I had her in in late March so she was on it from April to November.

I guess I could have her on it year round, but it didn't seem necessary in the winter months.

Mine take heartworm meds year round because we live so far in the south that it is the wisest thing to do. My vet does a heartworm check every other year on mine since he knows that I am treating them monthly. I guess each one is different.

I used to think think that too ...
MosQuitoes "only" live in the WARM months ...

Till I was at the utility sink in the garage on an odd Warm Day in
mid-December or January a number of years ago.

    And WHAT's THIS!???
A SWARM (OK ~ 4 or 5 ) of MOSQUITOES flew out from under
the sink! They must have been "wintering over" in the unheated
    relative comfort of the garage.

I asked the Vet about it - and he replied that he always "suggests"
folks give Heartwoen Preventative YEAR-Round - just to deal with
the BUGS that DO hang around all winter - and pop out on warm days.

Most Vets *insist* on a Heartworm RE-test if they haven't sold you
enough medication to last all 12 months.

Sorry about poor Kia's *Itchy* Ears ...
    Feel Better SOON, Kia!
