What places, historic sites, colleges, etc, do you live near?

Random thread. Just curious what everybody lived near. Like historic sites, colleges, blah..

Colleges

ETSU (East TN State University) is right down the road from my house.

UT (University of TN) Is only 2 hours away from me, so not too far.

VT (Virginia Tech) Not sure the exact distance, but I know it's rather close.

Historic Sites

Andrew Johnson Birthplace (Greenville, TN)

Boones Creek, TN I think it has something to do with Daniel Boone.. .

Other

Appalachian Mtns. Guess they kind of count, right?

That's all I can think of right now, but if I remember others, I'll be back.

Just about everything! Our area is rife with both history and colleges.

We live next to Boston, site of the Boston Tea Party, the Boston Massacre, the Battle of Bunker Hill, etc. "Old Ironsides" - a.k.a. the USS Constitution is anchored nearby in Boston Harbor. Lexington and Concord (the reason we celebrate Patriot's Day and "the shot heard 'round the world") are nearby, as is Walden Pond (of Thoreau and the Existentialists fame). Mt. Auburn cemetary - on the same street as my church - is the burial-place of countless famous Americans, including Winslow Homer, Julia Ward Howe and Isabella Stewart Gardner, whose home became a world-renowned museum which is also nearby. And the colleges around here include Harvard, Boston University, Boston College, Bentley, Brandeis, Regis, Wellesley, Tufts, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Northeastern, Wentworth, and many, many, many more, large and small, including my alma mater Massachusetts College of Art.

We have the atlantic vet collage. It's pretty good. We get a lot of people who travel to take their sick pets there.

We also have Anne of Green Gables, The Confed Bridge, stuff...I don't know lol

Well, for collages, ASU(Arkansas State University) is pretty close to us... my sister attends it.

Turpentine Creek - A big cat reserve.. thing. They take great care of their animals. I've been there a time or two and its really nice. =]

Branson is pretty close to us, aswell. For those who aren't familiar, its a big tourist place, basically. Has Silver Dollar City and such. Haven't been there in years, but used to go every year as a little kid. I have alot of memories there.

Hmm.. Nothing really historical about that, but its something!

edit/ the later two are in MO. I live on the border, so both MO & AR things are pretty close to me. Just wanted to make that clear^^.

UC Davis is about a half hour away, it is the number one rated vet school in the country and it is where my daughter plans to go to school. Lake Tahoe is about an hour and a half away.

I really like it here because it is a few hours from the ocean and a few hours from the mountains.

Pittsburgh is the home of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University. Both campuses are about 5 minutes from where I live. Also, in downtown Pittsburgh is Point State Park where you can see two rivers join to form the Ohio river. Also in the park is the remanents of Fort Pitt built in 1759. One blockhouse sitll stands at the site.

Near? I live IN San Francisco - can't get any closer than that to the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, the Cliff House, North Beach, San Francisco Opera House, all the wonderful old Victorian houses - I live in one. Cable cars are public transportation, although the tourists don't think so.

Ehh I think I should get the award for this place. I live right next to the Indiana State Prison, woo hoo.

But other than that I'm near Lake Michigan, The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Mt. Baldy, The Lighthouse Mall, and I'm about 45 min from Chicago.

Karen, I have always wanted to go to Boston. Every year I think this is the year. There is so much I would love to see in your area.

Uhhh I cant really think right now but I live about 15 minutes from bloomsburg University and we have a bunch of other colleges but they are about an hour away but are also much more popular then Bloom.... about 20 minutes from Centralia.... We have alot of historical things but I dont know exactly which ones because I never really paid much attention to them... If I think of more I will post it.

Well, I wouldn't come now - unless you're a good swimmer - it is STILL raining, but when you make it up this way, let me know. Boston is a lovely city to visit, really, as it's very small, and things are close to each other. And I didn't even list things like the New England Aquarium, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Science Museum, etc!

That goes for anyone coming to Boston - we'd love to meet up with you!

Stop, you are killing me, lol. One of the reasons I haven't gotten there is because I really do not want to go by myself, and all of my friends would rather spend their vacations at the beach or on cruises or in Mexico (I guess they would rather go somewhere warm). There is nothing wrong with any of those things, it just means I can't get them to go to Boston with me.
