**Rabbit Litter Suggestion Needed**

Howdy! I need some ideas on good but $cheap$ litter I can use for Princess Peanut. I currently use Green Aspen Supreme Pellets.

I cannot afford to keep buying the current litter I am using it is a little over $10 a bag and I am going through one bag a week. I also don't like the smell either. I do not want to use any wood shavings- she eats them, and I would prefer not to use newspaper- she eats the newspaper too.

I am cleaning her litter box once a day, sometimes twice when it is really icky. I was thinking Carefresh except every place around here wants over $20 a bag- if I knew it would last me a long time I would consider buying it. How is corncob!? If I am changing the litter daily, is there anything I really need to worry about!? I know it can mold, but I would not allow it to get to that dirty.

Suggestions please!

One tip....never by clumping cat litter...rabbits tend to eat their litter and it can clog them up and kill them!I just use normal wood shavings, some rumors go around about how dust can effect the rabbit or w/e but it never has happened and I've been using these ever since day 1. Around here the cost for a HUGE I mean HUGE vaccum packed bag of wood shavings(no pine or ceder,dangerous) for about $3.00 a 15lb bag of pellets for $5 and a bale of hay for $4! Dirt cheap! While not even a 5lb bag at a petstore is $7! Anywayz good luck litter hunting!

I suggest swheat scoop small animal litter, its is completly natural, it naturally eliminates odors, is clump using natural enzyms in the wheat so it is complety safe to eat. its bio-degradable, certified flushable, and I only go through 1 small bag a month(scoop out the dirty stuff every night and add a little more each time) it oly takes $12CDN a month out of my budget!

Well, I guess it wouldn't be any use since you said she eats wood shavings, but Aspen is very cheap, and it's great as far as odor absorbing, and it isn't dusty. It's $12 for the BIG bag, and lasts almost a month (with Benjamin and the guinea pigs!) Maybe if you provide her with more hay she wouldn't eat the shavings?

Cali, I saw you suggest swheat scoop before, and I looked for it in the petstore and couldn't find it. Where do you get it?

Carefresh wroks Great for Thelmer. I don't have to clean her litter for a while when I use it. I've used it with her since she was a baby that's all I've used!!

Try ordering some online. I think it may be cheaper. I f you order some you might want to get the 10 liter just to try it out. It's really DOES work!

She gets tons and tons of hay everyday...her hayrack is never empty, so that is not an issue!

I get swheat scoop from petcetera, but only some petstores get it in, obviously petcetera does, petsmart is suposed too, basicly I believe they only sell it to very reputable petstores.

ONE THING I FIND REALLY HELPFULL is going to home depot, get one of those light fixture grids for buildings. the plastic ones.. cut it to size for the litter box.. put litter in box,, put grid on top of that.. then put a lil bit of hay for them, just a lil bit, not like a whole bunch where they are peein all over it... one thing that also helped, is when i put the litter in, i pushed the litter and mad a lil hole for there droppings to gather, so it piles less on top of the grid.. the holes are big enough for droppings to fall through, yet small enough it wont hurt them... the grids are only like 10 dollars.. and you have enough for like 2 or 3 litter boxes.. hope this is helpfull... the litter i use is carefresh... but the amonia gets too strong when i change it.. so im gonna try the wood pellets again... ya just have to keep finding stuff.. BUT the grid idea really reallly works... if anything.. you can go to rabbit.org/chat at 9pm central time.. there are tons of ppl in there, well not tons like 10 ppl.. and 3 of them are administrators..
they know everything.. well almost.. about bunnies

Rabbits don't need a full dish of pellets all the time ya know! Only growing babies need a full dish at all times. I simply give my Mini Rex(Spice & Hershey) 1/4 cup pellets per day. That sounds liek a cruel amount but my vet suggested it and it is all they need for their body weight. Oreo & babies get 2 cups per day but once the babies are full grown they will get the same amount as Spice & Hershey. How much does your doe weigh? Here is the recommended feeding chart:

5-7 lb of body wt.- 1/4 cup daily

8-10 lb body wt.- 1/2 cup daily

11-15 lb of body wt.- 3/4 cup daily

And one cup of veges per day(says in my rabbit care book). I give my rabbits breakfast(1 carrot each and 1 slice of apple each) and supper(1 piece of romaine lettuce each,1 carrot each,1 grape each....sometimes banana). Do not give her cereal since it will make her gain weight so rapidly(that's what happened to Spice, no more cheerios for her....EVER!) and human food either(Also what happened to Spice). My sister won't listen to me and she keeps giving Fudgeo garlic fingers,pizza,human food(dont worry absoloutly NO chocolate!), I tell her not to feed it to her but "she's my rabbit and I can do what I want with her!"....
Anyways that got way off topic, my point was feed her less if you aren't already, that way you won't go through too many pellets!(I get a 15lb bag for I think $4.50 canadian).....the pellets I buy are Purina brand too!

Um, ok, I already know all of that....Peanut get's a 1/2 cup of Oxbow Basics/T daily. Along with a full hay rack of Timothy hay and she gets romaine lettuce and other greens in the evening. Rabbits poop a lot- that is just how they are. Rabbits make 100-300 droppings daily- even if you don't feed them a lot...(read that in books/online)


I think I am going to try Yesterday's News and see how that works. I was at PetCo the other day and they had a 10 pound (I think it was 10lb) bag for $19.99, I looked at the store where I work (Fleet Farm- farm/outdoor store) and they have a 20 lb bag for $3.69!!!! I couldn't believe it! I had to check the price twice- I thought it was in the wrong spot!!! So, when I run out of the stuff I am currently using- I am going to give that a go!

It's great you already know that....just making sure. PetCo seems just like Pets Unlimited(a.k.a PU) EXPENSIVE! Usually stores like the one you found the pellets at have everythign cheap(like ValleyField Farm). Spice usually lets about 20-30 turds in one sitting, I counted once! LOL!
