    Got Advice?

Hey everyone ... long time since I've stopped by - i hope everyone and they're furry friends are well

Big changes are coming up for me, Justin, Toby and Lily. We're going to be moving to Alberta June 1st. Got our flight booked with two spots for the cats - so basically I'm just wondering who else has travelled with cats on a plane, and if you have any tips on having things go smoothly..

I'm worried about Toby because he HATES travelling .. its a 6 hour flight with chances of delays - and we have one stop off in Toronto.

When should you stop feeding them and giving them water? I'm just worried that we'll have such a long journey and they won't be able to use their litter for probably 8-10 hours ...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    J

I would talk to your vet. When my husband moved here from Vancouver and brought his cat Kaliban we sedated her. Even though she was going to be under the seat. The vet gave her a med called Acepromazin. I think that is how it is spelled. It doesnt' totally knock them out but it takes the edge off and lets them sleep more. It helped her out a lot. I think he withheld food for 12 hours......I don't remember if the water was the same amount or not.

I would NOT sedate your cats. When I spoke to British customs officers, they said the highest causes of feline travel problems and deaths are caused by sedation.

Johanna, I don't have much to contribute on travelling cats, just wanted to say hello. What does you bring to Alberta?

All the best for Toby and Lily

Acepromazine isn't really a sedation. I miss-spoke when I said that. It is often used as a anti-naseua (sp)...It just tends to make them a bit sleepy and a little calmer. And less likely to throw up. If the cats are in the cabin with you there shouldn't be any problems. Good luck...are you moving because of a new job? My sister in law lives in Calgary.

I would consult with a vet about possibly getting a tranquilizer for the flight. I know a woman who flew from ukraine to Toronto with her cat (16 hours), and she had it tranked before she left

Sounds like kitty Dramamine. I don't know anything about moving cats, but am glad you're keeping them in the cabin. Good luck...what sends you to that frozen Ag Zone 3 Alberta?
