    Urinating very little, but may times after spay?

    Abby was spayed on Monday and came home yesterday. She's suddenly acting like she has a UTI. She squats and pees a bit, sometimes just a few drops, and then literally a minute later she's doing the same thing again. We called the vet that the rescue group had us take her to (not our usual vet) and they said it's probably a temporary complication from her spay, and that if she's not better by Saturday to bring her back in.

    My question is, does this sound normal? I've heard of spayed dogs having incontinence later on, but this is not incontinence. It looks just like a UTI.

    I like this vet a lot, but I'm worried about this sweetie.

    Definitely sounds like a UTI. Can you get a urine sample? It's doubtful that she would be exhibiting post spaying hormonal related incontinence so soon post spaying. My Cody has been treated for that for years. But it was several months after the spaying that she started leaking. This sounds much more like infection. With hormone related incontinence, they urinate normal amts. at normal intervals, but "leak" unexpectedly, i.e. while sleeping, sitting, etc. UTI's are fairly common after surgery I wouldn't wait until Saturday, though. I'm surprised the vet said to wait until then..."if she doesn't get better." She's probably experiencing quite a bit of discomfort and within a day or two, the infection can definitely worsen. Could you call them back? Maybe they'll let you bring in a urine sample for testing without an exam? I hope you can get her in asap. Feel better sweet Abby Please keep us updated Micki. {{{HUGS}}}

    Thanks Sandra. That's what I thought, too. I'm going to try to get a sample and take it to my vet tomorrow.

    micki76,

    Just wanted to say that I hope she gets better soon. It would
    be a shame if she had a set back now. I do agree she shows
    classic signs of a UTI. Hope you feel better soon Abby.

    The vet finally gave us antibitoics this afternoon, so she shoul be feeling better soon.

    She starts her heartworm treatment next week. I'm so worried that my gang is going to excite her and cause complications. I think I'm going to talk to the rescue VP and see about boarding her for the first two weeks .

    Thanks for asking about her, Sandra.

    Glad to hear Miss Abby has started her UTI treatment Poor girl, heartworm treatment is tough. Several of my group's rescues who were diagnosed heartworm positive have been boarded during their treatment. It can be stressful Tell us know what they say. You're an angel And it goes without saying that Abby is too!

    Lots of prayers coming Abby's way. Hope everything goes well and her heartworm treatment goes well.

    Only you can decide whether boarding is the best option. The choice between keeping her quiet in a kennel versus the TLC she will get at your house. Whatever you decide will be best for her - that I am absolutely sure of.

    Good Luck.
