    I Can Dream can't I ???

A copy of a article (Chicago Trib.) I read this morning. Seems pretty hopeless to dream this would happen now though.

The speech John McCain must give

If Republican presidential candidate John McCain wants to salvage his tattered reputation for decency and perhaps even his sagging campaign, here's the speech he ought to deliver this weekend:

My friends, I want to tell you a few things about my opponent, Barack Obama, that I want all of you to know and remember.

Senator Obama is a patriotic American, as American as you or I. He loves this country and he wants, as badly as I do, to keep our citizens safe and to help them lead prosperous, healthy lives. He wants to improve education, clean up the environment and increase our nation's stature around the world, just as I do.

We happen to have very different ideas about how to meet these goals.

But Barack Obama is not a terrorist, as some of my supporters have shouted during campaign rallies. He is not a terrorist sympathizer or a secret ally of America's enemies, as certain guest and hosts on cable TV talk programs have said recently. He is not a criminal. He is not a baby killer. He is not a pervert.

Those who have been saying otherwise in the heat of this campaign are deeply wrong. Those who have been invoking Sen. Obama's middle name in an effort to suggest that he is somehow foreign or has hidden foreign ties are disgraces.

Their words -- their signs and their chants -- have created a poisonous, even dangerous atmosphere not only in these mobs, but in this country. I hear people are expressing fear that we may elect as president an enemy of the United States and of our form of government.

That's false. And that kind of talk not only risks dividing us deeply as a people, but it can also lead to violence.

I reject it. I reject the support of people who, in my name, level such attacks on a good American and true patriot such as Barack Obama.

When I say that he is a "risky" candidate for president, I don't mean that he is an enemy of the United States. When I ask my followers, "Who is Barack Obama?" I don't mean to offer a wink to the vile smears about him in a viral e-mail of that name, but to suggest that voters have not examined his record closely enough.

Barack Obama is not an extremist, my friends. He is a liberal United States senator with whom I have many honest disagreements.

In the closing weeks of this hard fought race, I want my campaign staff and my supporters to highlight those disagreements and use those contrasts to persuade voters that I have a far better plan to lead this nation during the difficult months and years ahead than the gentleman from Illinois.

I want my campaign and my supporters to highlight the differences in our records, our experience, our agendas, and our judgment. I want them to be tough in making the argument that I am the stronger, steadier and more seasoned candidate for President of the United States.

I believe they can and will make that argument and that Gov. Palin and I will win on Nov. 4. And when we do (or on the off chance we don't), I don't want the country to be any more fractured, angry and scared than it already is.

No matter what the outcome, I want all of us to be able to come together on the morning of Nov. 5 --not as Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, but as Americans united in optimism determination and pride.

A good and fundamentally decent man will be our president elect. He will need the hopes and prayers of a nation to lift him. As one we must say "God bless him. And God bless the United States of America."

And Senator McCain has to be the one to kiss and play nice why?

Both sides are slinging mud, they're equally guilty.

Now LH....could you show me where Obama or his running mate has suggested that McCain is not a "true patriot"? A pal of terrorist? "That one"? A subversive?

    Please?

In specifically those words, not, but McCain's record has been distorted, Keating five allegations dredged back up, his military record has been attacked (Not directly by the campaign, but by people damned close to it), his marriage(s) and personal life have gone over with a fine toothed comb.

    Neither campaign is clean, Sara.

Okay...without looking it up...what is McCain's middle name?

    I betcha know Obama's dontcha?

And to the point of the article Liz posted...when has McCain's "patriotism" been questioned?

I knew Sen. Obama's middle name shortly after he was sworn in as a Senator and Sen. Kennedy absolutely BUTCHERED his name.

Had nothing to do with the campaign.

And I'd say the constant harping on McCain's physical and mental health are a bit more scathing for the candidates than questions about patriotism.

McCain's mental health???? I have heard nothing about that! Dish, dish!

I did hear his physical health alluded to by those lovely Wasilla Main Street denizen!

And how many US voters heard Obama's middle name from Ted Kennedy. Now you are just being silly!

Actually, being that the sound bite was a national joke for a couple weeks, probably many.

McCain has been called unstable by several on the other side of the aisle, if you haven't seen those stories you must have one hell of a set of blinders on.

  10. Seriously I haven't. I have heard him referred to as hot headed and quick tempered. But I do not consider that a "mental health" issue. You know I would not miss something as juicy as that!

You're just being silly about the Ted Kennedy thing...I hope. A few years passed between Obama's swearing in as a Senator and the campaign. I don't think Joe Sixpack watches all that much of Teddy. "National joke" seems a bit of hyperbole.

(Joe Sixpack....that is such an insulting nickname but whatever...)

So let me ask the question again...when has Obama or his running mate said anything about McCain's mental or physical health, patriotism, terrorist status or palling around with terrorist?

You would think that McCain would remember when his campaign was derailed by the dirty tricks of Bush and Rove in South Carolina. When they started rumors that he fathered a black child (his adopted daughter from India) and that his wife is a drug addict. But then again, perhaps he DID remember. And what is McCain's middle name?

While both sides are slinging the mud, the ratio is not even. According to CNN, 97% of the McCain ads are negative; 30% of the Obama ads are negative.

    Thanks Grace!

ANd CNN is an arbiter of equality how?

They have how many former high level dems working for them as "analysts"?

What % of ads are negative vs. positive is hardly an objective statistic. Speaking of which, there are lies, there are damned lies, and there are statistics.

    BINGO!! And the winner is . . . . . LH!!

First he said this -Both sides are slinging mud, they're equally guilty.

Now it is this - What % of ads are negative vs. positive is hardly an objective statistic.

    Last I looked 50 - 50 was fairly equal. 97 - 30, not so much.
