    Ash update....

Just thought i would stop by and tell you how old Ashey boy is doing.

Since his diagnosis of CRF two months ago, things have been very up and down for my ole fella, he has lost a dramatic amount of weight ,he is a shadow of his former self, getting him to eat is a real mission and takes time and effort, well worth it i might add, i think we have tried almost every cat food available almost, one day he will love one particular food , the next day he does not even want to know about it, some days he eats well, others hardly at all, enough to feed a mouse really.

I realise this is all part of his condition but it saddens me and fustrates me and upsets me to see him like this.

He was a large rather chubby old fella before, and he weighed in at 6.7kgs which was a tad overweight, he came down to 5.2,which was the weigh in at the vets for the dental, and now he is my lightest cat weighing in at 4.4, i can hardly believe he weighs so little, he is a bag of bones and so frail and fragile now compared to this large stature cat i used to have.

On the brighter side, i really believe his medication is helping him and keeping him going, he also hardly vomits these days, only occasionally, so even though he eats little he is keeping it down mostly, and since the dental he eats very slowly and chews his food properly, he used to scoff it down so quickly and usually that resulted in him bringing it up again.

So all in all there is some improvement, but of course some decline which is to be expected, i don't know how long my old boy will be with us, but we are making the most of it,he has even become much more placid natured and cuddly compared to what he used to be.

He has developed more of a bond with my daughter Melissa, spending every night with her on her bed,she loves Ash very much and was the one who at eight years old found him and asked me if we could keep him,sad in some ways as she is going to be very upset when his time comes as we all are.

Melissa has said if we ever want to go away for a night she will pill Ash and make sure he eats, she say's no way is he ever going in a cattery, i thought that was quite sweet, although pilling him would be very difficult for her indeed.

Well guess who is upstairs at the moment visiting me, my old Ash, his ears must be burning lol.

Anyhow that is about it really, just keep those positive thoughts going for my dear boy please, would appreciate it very much, thanks again for listening to me prattle on.

p.s i must add the pilling is going well now, practice makes perfect, well almost, Ash seems more resigned to the fact,no matter what ,those awful owners of his are going to stick that pill down his throat, no matter what he trys,so all in all a much easier task, with less stress on kitty and us,phew thank goodness.

Carole, I'm so sorry to hear about Ash's condition. Here are alot of Pittsburgh prayers and thoughts and of course {{{{Hugs}}}} coming to you and good wishes to your family. I'm happy to hear that Melissa wants to take on the responsibily of pilling Ash. It shows that she's a grown up.

Thanks my friend, got the old boy to eat reasonably well yesterday, but it sure is a battle , i am sure many others can sympathize who have CRF kitties, yes Melissa is a pretty responsible young lady, she will only pill him if we decided to go away for night, but i am not planning that in the near future, and i know how difficult a task it is, takes two of us to do it,but the thought that she wants to take on his care is nice isn't it?

Carole, Ripley is a CRF kitty and was diagnosed I think about 2 1/2 - 3 years ago but blood test showed the problem began as far back as 6 years ago. I've never had a problem with him not eating but of course like you said every case is different. He did have a problem with constant vomiting until my vet recommended I put him on Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. Since starting that last year in June he has gained a much needed pound and doesn't throw up much any more which is huge because he was a chronic barfer his whole life.

He doesn't have to take any special meds and we've started giving him sub-q fluids here at home monthly. Before that he only needed fluids about every 4-6 months. At 16 1/2 years I think he's doing pretty good but I know that can change at any moment.

I'm really sorry to hear that Ash hasn't been doing as well. Is it possible the meds might be causing the lack of appetite or are they suppose to help with that? I'm not sure what he is taking. Maybe the B vitamins in the fluids would give him a little extra pep. I take my Dad for a B12 injection once a month and I can see the difference it makes in him energy and appetite wise. Probably would work the same way for cats.

Please give him some extra hugs and scritchies for me.
