    Yukon Wildlife Preserve pics....

I took my nieces to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve last month. It covers almost 800 acres so sometimes you get to see critters sometimes not so much! We got lucky that day and saw quite a few.

The Muskox. There's a fence wire in the pic because we werent' allowed to get too close to their fence. Muskox are highly aggressive animals, especially when they are in rut. They were behind three layers of fencing...looked kinda like parts of my yard!

A massive bull elk. He was just shedding the velvet off his antlers.

A baby muskox and baby mountain goat. They were both born as twins to young mothers. The momma critters rejected one of each set of twins. In the wild they would have died, but here they are being bottle fed and will eventually be reintegrated back into their packs.

A beautiful Stone Sheep. He was just hanging out by his water tub.

    A big ol' mountain goat.

And a baby caribou getting a drink from his momma.

    Few more coming

A bison. The bison herd was visible, but a long ways from the fence.

Some more caribou. The 'bou were quite social and interested in the humans near their fence. Caribou in the wild tend to be quite curious and social too.

Another 'bou. He was trying to scratch his antlers. He was shedding his velvet too, which is apparently quite an itchy, annoying process for them!

The moose and the deer were hiding. We could see them, but couldn't get decent pics. The preserve only has one predator animal, a lynx, but he was hiding too.

Wow - seems like you chose the perfect day, lots of critters out and about! The muskox just looks so massive. Are they as smelly as the name implies, or is their musk just apparent during mating season?

I didn't know that they have been around so long that they were around when Wooly Mammoths were alive. That's cool!
