TV, VCR & DVD recorder hook up

Okay, I've been at this a while and now I'm completely confused. I have a TV, a VCR and a DVD player/recorder. I'm trying to convert my vhs tapes to dvd. What goes "in" and what goes "out" to which unit with ther red, white and yellow cables???
I'm additionally frustrated cause I managed to record four tapes okay but something must have been changed. I'm not trying to watch tv on this set so there's no cable issue. *sigh* Sometimes I feel so useless with this sort of thing

I have to get my grandson to come hook up stuff like that for me. It is suppose to be simple to do and he does it in minutes.... however I find it to confusing.
