    sneezing kitty

I've had my one year old DSH kitty for about two months now. He has recently begun sneezing somewhat frequently and for the last two days he has only eaten about half of what he normally eats. I'm a little worried about him. Does anyone know if this could be a sign of some serious disease or is he probably just a little sick?

He needs to go to the vet. He will need meds to clear it up. A sure sign it's time to go to the vet is when they are not eating normally or behaving normally. I don't think it is serious but he will need some antibiotics.

I agree, a trip to the vets is in order. Probably nothing serious, but especially in a young kitten if they don't eat and drink properly then can dehydrate quickly. I am sure an antibiotic will take care of the problem in no time. Let us know how you make out.

By the Way, Welcome to PT!

Thanks so much kittycats_delight for the beautiful siggy and avatar of my kids!

Odds are good its a respiratory tract infection. Definitely needs to go to the vet for meds.

Cats do get "colds". They are subject to some strains of the same virus(es) that give us colds.

Cats can get dust alergies. Fifi once turned over a container of Cindy's foudation powder an got a "nose full" for her troubles. She would sneeze and then wiggle her head to clear it - only to have to sneeze on the very next breath. From a distance you could hear "Chew" - "Chew" - "Chew" - "Chew". She was so weak when it was over.

If your cat has not cleared up in 48 hours, yep, head for the vet.

Yes a vet trip is the best for peace of mind, especially if the appetite has diminished somewhat, otherwise it could be just a mild cold or allergies, both my kitties appear to have allergies, do you have the kitty vaccinated against cat flue, if not please do so, that can be a killer, but it sure sounds like nothing too serious, but when in doubt, get professional help, good luck and I hope kitty's health improves quickly.

It's either one of two things, a. An Upper Respiratory Infection, aka kitty cold,(NOT a Respiratory Tract Infection as Dragonchilde posted) or, b. Kitty Asthma/Allergies.

I have an 11 year old tortie, Mollie Rose, who has constant sneezing, wheezing, watery eyes and runny nose. The vet diagnosed her with kitty asthma and allergies. She's on an antihistamine for the cold symptoms and prednisone (only as needed) for her asthma.

I think a trip to the vet is in order. Let us know how you make out!

First i just have to comment on what a gorgeous kitty Chloe is, her markings are beautiful, she is a real stunner, as for the cold, last year my older cat Ash was quite sick, we took him to the vet, who treated him as if he had a dose of the cat flue, although he is vaccinated against it, he recovered but kept sneezing for months afterwards, I now notice this winter he is sneezing again constantly, I believe he has allergies, as he is not sick in any way at all, so perhaps that could be kitties problems too, just a thought I wanted to pass on.

Donna can you post and tell us what kind of antihistimanes your kitty is on, are they special ones only for cats, usually human medication is no good for kitties but i wondered in the case of allergies if it is or not?

    Cat Sneezing

You might want to get that checked out. My can sneezes all the time and I started to get worried. It turned out that he has a type if herpes virus. He gets a flare up whenever he is stressed or nervous. It doesn't hurt him. He can live a normal life with it. In time it does something to break down something in his nose, but he will be okay. There's no medicine.

I give Mollie Rose an antihistimine called Chlortrimeton. It's for humans. I give her a half a tab whenever I see her nose and eyes running and her sneezing gets really bad. It really helps her.

There was an article in Cat Fancy Magazine a while ago about cats sneezing problems. It seems it has alot of vet baffled. They finally figured out that it has to do with the cat being exposed to a herpes virus at a young age.

That's what happened with Mollie Rose. But she eats and drinks well and uses the litterbox so I just try to make her as comfortable as possible.

Thank you Donna, I will check with my vet if Loratab the one I use for my allergies is suitable for cats, as I would like to give Ash something now and then, I find the herpes virus thing very interesting, because it was only last year when Ash did get very sick, that he then continued to sneeze for months later and has done again this year, but he is not sick this time, at this particular time we had the Ginger tom in the pram in the carport, who was also sneezing, could he have caught it off him, He is the cute ginger boy that is adopted by my neighbour across the road now.

Our cat Yuri has kidney disase and he wasn't eating and he threw up twice. So we took him to the vets and he has a slight temprature and is being given medicine for his temprature.
Best of luck for your kitty.
