taking sassy 4 walks

when i take sassy 4 walks she will pull and will not stay beside me unless she is on a retractible leash (it broke).i really don't like it does any1 have any ideas on her staying beside me?if so please post!!!

I would suggest lots and lots of treats and praise when she is walking beside you and maybe a halti (Head halter). I use a halti for my Rottie Shadow and she walks VERY nicely now and she used to pull a lot, however this does not solve the pulling problem. Best of luck

My advice is the same Obedience!! trust me, it is 150% worth the cost if you find a good trainer and you really stick to it!

And, a head halter is basically self explanitory. . a halter that is adjusted on the dogs head, so when the dogs tries to pull on the leash his/her head is jerked backwards. Honestly, I think using a Halti would only be a band-aid on the training issue. OB classes will help you handle this and cure the pulling in a positive way, and it'll help you in many many other aspects too (recall, stays, basic commands, behavior issues, bonding, etc).

My trainer ended up recommending a pinch collar on my chow/pointer mix. Most people don't like them and I have to say I was one of them, but it's worked great for her. She had no training when we got her and is a complete spazz when it comes to walks. I tried regular collars, harnesses, gentle leaders(head leaders I think they're called), choke chains, treats, etc., you name it I tried it. I finally got tired of her pulling my arm off and gave up and took her to a trainer who suggested the pinch collar, and showed me how to use it correctly and how to teach her not to pull. I would definately recommend taking your dog to a trainer explaining the problem and they can usually show you what to do and recommend what type of lead your dog should use to help with the pulling.

this is the first time i posted about this subject (leash training).about how much is obedience training (@ petsmart it is $100 and i doo not have that kind of money)?

It's usually a collar that has prongs on it. It works similiar to the choke chain, except when it tightens it pinches instead of chokes. You should never leave it on when not on walks or the dog is unattended, and I really recommend letting a trainer show you how to use it correctly.

Seriously, how much did Sassy cost? Well over $100, I'm guessing. How much do you spend on Starbucks/extra stuff/clothes every month that you dont need? Just save whatever you can and put it into Sassy's Obedience fund every month, and you'll have $100 very soon! Obedience doesnt only train the dog, it trains you!! Check out your local ASPCA, they might have lower cost classes available. If you really cant afford it, buy a few good Obedience books and *dilligently* practice every day for 15 minutes at a time (at least once a day). Make sure you give her plenty of exercise, not only walks. She needs to be able to run and play for at least 30 minutes a day in a secure, fenced area. Make sure she has been exercised before walking or training her. I wouldn't recommend prong collars or Haltis at all. . first, the user should already have been through Obedience classes and knows how/when to use these training devices. This is just basic Obedience!! There are a lot of good websites out there with training info. . .

she cost $250.but i only paid $50 and my parents paid $200 (birthday present).i will try 2 put money aside 4 obc (obedience class).about how much do u think i should put aside each *payday*?

I'm confused... it happens alot as I get older! Why do you want the dog to be at your side when you take it for walks? I personally don't want mine heeling in position when I take them for walks as long as they are not pulling on the lead. It's a better walk for them and me plus it undermines when I do teach heeling. When in a heel position the dog is to give you it's attention. When walking, I want the dog to enjoy it's walk instead of focusing on me.

Don't get me wrong. I teach obedience. Heeling is a very valuable learning experience for a dog but I don't think it needs to be reinforced during a casual walk. Are you really just wanting to know how to get the dog to stop pulling on the leash when you go for a walk?

I had a golden for 14 years. I have a mutt now and if I want her to walk beside me I take her to a no where place - no people or dogs around. I take off her leash and bring food - I make sure she has not eaten lately - she must be hungry- I ask her to stay with momma and reprimand her if she does not listen. If she does not listen more than once I end the walk and take her home.
It sounds mean but it works. She loves to go for walks and if it ends and she has to get back in the truck and go home she is really heartbroken plus she is not given food treats. It Works.
after a while - do it more than 10 times.

i have got GREAT news!!!my neighbor (Jason (has 3 dogs)) is going 2 help me train sassy.i still don't know how much it will $ be but i am still so very grateful that he would do that.i will probably start getting him 2 train her in about 2 weeks (we r leaving 2 go 2 alabama wednesday).he also has a choker chain that he is going 2 let me use!!!btw thanx 4 all yur helpful replies!if u were @ my house sassy would be giving each and every 1 of u wet slobery kisses 4 all the help and suggestions y'all have given.
