An introduction... and a farewell :(

I haven't had a chance to introduce my newest betta until now. I was thinking of naming him "Flare" since that's all he was doing at the store.

I went to the store to look at the fish stuff. I didn't intend on walking out with Betta #7. He caught my eye and I walked back and forth debating on whether or not I should get him. I was attracted to his pretty fins. None of my other Bettas had fins like his. And he was the prettiest blue I've ever seen.

Yesterday, he was doing fine. Then this morning, I went to check on him and I noticed he had fuzz all over him. I looked it up and found out it was a fungus infection. I left for work earlier so I could pick up some meds in the mall. I had planned to move him to the 10 gallon while being medicated. When I got home, I saw that I was too late.

I haven't even had him for a week yet and he was already starting to become my favorite.

It's crazy how attached I've become on these little guys.

Here are some pictures. He was such a pretty boy!

I thought his fins were so cool! Not exactly a crowntail but none of my other bettas had fins like his!

From earlier today.. he was extremely lethargic and his colors weren't as vibrant.

Nope. Yikes, thank god I didn't put him in the 10 gallon with the divider like I planned to. My other guy would have fungus too.

Aw, Ash. I'm so sorry. He was a beauty.

This is one reason I refuse to use a divided tank. You just never know what's going to happen, and it's hard enough to have one sick fish, I can't imagine havving two sick.

I went in to return the medication and he asked why, so I told him that the Betta I bought from them last week had died before I could medicate it. He just seemed irritated that I said that in front of other customers LOL. I usually get my Bettas from a smaller store owned by a nice older couple. Flare and Korkie came from a pet store in the mall.. I'm not buying anymore from them.

I'm so sorry about your Betta - he most definitely had something before you got him, and you should go complain to the store.

A bit of inside information on how they handle fish in the pet trade - it's not pretty.

I know someone who used to work in the trade, and he said that to keep the fish quiet and dormant so that they require the least amount of water during shipping, they dump cyanide into the water to shock the fish into a dormant state, drain out all but the minimum amount of water, and box them up so that more fish fit in a single package.

Some of them, alas, never come out of it upon reaching the store. This is considered "acceptable losses"...

    Sick.
