I had the vet aspirate a small lump on Paxil back leg this afternoon. The news could not be worse. It's a Mast Cell Tumor. I'm not entirely sure what means in terms of life expectancy for Paxil at this point. We have to deal with the pancreatitis first. Right now she is too weak to survive being put under to remove the *(*(#&(*%# thing! My vet says it's not immediately life threatening. The pancreatitis is. So we are going to keep treating that. Hopefully, Paxil will still be able to come home tomorrow evening. She is going to be fed tomorrow, a small bland meal, in the morning. If she keeps it down she can come home with a prescription diet and medications.
In about three weeks, if she doesn't have a relapse of the pancreatitis, her blood will be retested and hopefully her liver enzeymes will have returned to normal levels. They are elevated right now. Then she can be knocked out and have the tumor removed. Generally, they are supposed to remove the tumor and 3cm of surrounding tissue. That will be difficult as Paxil's tumor is in a spot where she doesn't have alot of extra skin--there won't be much to stitch back up. My vet say she will remove as much as possible and still leave enough that the wound will heal relatively well. That's as far as I got with the vet today. Then she had to go and I started crying. I'm trying to make a list of questions for her that I will ask tomorrow when I pick my girl up.
