Norton Internet Security 2004

After hours of struggling to update my virus scan software, I finally uninstalled the old and installed the new. I mean hours. Lots of emails with the tech folks.

Anyway, I have it working - lots of options to block this and that. Lots of child proofing (what? I have no children)....etc. etc. Now that I have it all set up, I can hardly access anything without a notice popping up asking me if I want to open the file, access the web site, allow cookies - you name it. Also, I can see only part of the pet talk sorts, as it must be blocking the portions that "count" or "track" my activity as well as others. So, I shall spend the rest of my day, undoing many of the controls and settings. As soon as I undo them, I will be back to square one - and will have spent hours and hours and $50. (49.99 to be exact)

I thought I would be happy at first - hoping for the viagra ads to stop....and the re-mortgage spam to stop - and well, we all know how to enlarge many body parts by now........

My mom has it, and honestly, I can't stand it. I use Zone Alarm for mine which is A LOT better. There is an options part (if you haven't seen it yet) where you can go in and tell it to allow access to that site. I had to do that to her yahoo mail cause it wouldn't let her in at all. Also when I was installing something for her, it came up and asked every 2 seconds if I wanted to allow this or that. So irratating

I use the Google toolbar for blocking the pop-up ads and it works well.


I think I have it 3 months and it blocked 309 ads up to now

If you are getting all those crazy pop ups you have spyware downloaded onto your computer. The problem with that is that it isn't a virus so a virus scan won't really get rid of it. You can choose to block the pop ups, but the spyware is still downloaded into your computer. To get rid of spyware I'm a big fan of Ad-Aware I think it works great. As for an anti-virus I hate norton, instead I use AVG I downloaded it a while back because i was having problems with my computer and Norton just wasn't cutting it. Since then I've had no problems with my computer at all.

I don't think NIS is just for ad blocking. It also helps with virus's and keeping people from being able to hack into your comp. More or less. I can't explain it well though but there is more to it then ads.

I had to allow ads and popups to be able to see the postings here.

I really have the software to prevent virus attacks and worms etc. so the ad things doesn't really bother me.

If I feel as though I want to change the settings from time to time, I can.

I just know how important it is to have a virus scan running at all times. I had one virus a while back, that took me days to get rid of.

I'm not sure if that was directed at me or not.

I know, that why a lot of people reccomend having some sort of adaware program to remove spyware since a virus scanner is unable to do that. It's good to have and frequently run both on your computer.

Letting my previous Norton Anti Virus program lapse led to my computer being infected horribly with virus'. Spyware too was at work and that was the worst...it was changing all my settings, not letting me access websites, causing me to crash constantly, shutting down everytime I tired to write anything. And the pop ups were coming every 30 seconds. For me at least, AdWare was of no help and only made things worse. An IT guy checked it out and since my computer was over 4 years old, suggested I get a new one. I love the new Norton 2004. I love all the options and alerts and flexibility it allows me with prefs and it lets me identify Spam email and then blocks them too. I too get those alerts, telling me what worm or virus was attempting to hack in and automatically blocks it. Both my Norton and Microsoft security programs have ad blocking feataures. I haven't had one pop up with this computer yet!

I have Norton 2004 and Ad-Aware on my PC, and have no trouble at all.

But then again, I have turned off stuff in Norton ...........

Anti-Vir never askes me stupid questions until it finds a virus, it auto turnes the virus off (if it is running, but they never get to thet state) & ask what I want to do with it. I always tell it to delete it.
& the best part is, that its 100% FREE!!!!

I use the google toolbar & it has blocked several thousand popups. It almost never lets popups through. I think I might get 1 every few months, I can live with that.
& thats 100% FREE too

I also run Ad-aware, it finds spyware & gets rid of them. It only runs when u want it to so it never gets in the way.
& this is also 100% FREE


SO I spend NO money & Nothing bad ever happeneds to our comps.

It was only a few yrs ago, that all (6 computers) our Computers were Window boxes. & we all used the above & were always fine. Now there r only 2 windows computer & the rest r Linux & Linux cannot get Viruses. I haven't see any popups since I've been running Linux so maybe popups r a nother Windows only thing .

I use a combination of AVG antivirus and System Mechanic. System mechanic blocks pop ups, finds spyware and is a general tool used to keep a computer in tip top shape! The only drawback to SM Ive found is that its so expensive.

We have Spybot (I think, my SO is the "sysadmin." That was the source of the antz that were showing up in some of my pages I loaded. We also have PCCillin, an antivirus that came with Optimum Online (I think.)

I have that too.. it works WELL! I have 950 blocked!

Hi,
I bought the Security Norton also. Now my computer runs a lot slower, but I get less pop ups. So, since I have just dial up I am going to upgrade to DSL to see if my computer runs faster. But I know how it feels to have all the problems you have had. It sucks.
