    Buddy Hurt himself..need advice!!!

Buddy just slipped outside running up some steps...he screamed and is crying...and he won't put any weight on his back foot....

Can I give him baby aspirin? I remember that aspirin or tylenol are dangerous for dogs, but I can't remember which....PLEASE HELP ME AND MY 9 YEAR OLD BOY!!

Aspirin is the one you want to give, not Tylenol. Buffered or "coated" if you have it. Poor Buddy!!! Keep him quiet and give him one aspirin. Hopefully it's "just" a pull or sprain. If he's still having a lot of trouble weight bearing in a few hours, I'd call the vet; it might be a good idea to get it xrayed. Actually, you might want to call now, since it's late on a Saturday afternoon and you might not be able to reach your vet tonight. I feel awful for you and your precious Buddy Please let us know how he's doing later this evening, ok? HUGS to you dear Buddy. Sandra

Oh sweetie, I feel for you. Your Buddy must be a very special doggie How big is Buddy? He's a Golden/Border Collie? He's big enough to take 2 baby aspirin. Can you go read the dosage on the aspirin bottle? I think baby aspirin is 82 mg. per tab so he could take two. An adult has 325 mg. of "aspirin." Is your Mom home? It is probably a good idea for you to call your vet. He probably should be looked at. Does Buddy seem to be in pain laying quietly? Make sure he stays off the leg till you can get it checked.

Buddy is a "Golden Border Collie" ??

He could handle ONE ADULT ASPIRIN - but a Baby Aspirin would
    be OK, too.

Just be sure it's "ASPIRIN" and not Tylenol or any other "exotic"
    pain reliever.

KEEP HIM *QUIET* and "off" the injured leg.

    I hope Buddy is okay!

When Mickey was a pup, my brother accidentally fell on him (he was running in the hall and Mickey came up behind him and surprised him). He cried and couldn't walk without wobbling or limping. So my mom lay him down on the floor and massaged his legs. The more she did it, the more it helped.

I hope the aspirin helps but maybe you can try massaging his legs too. It might relieve some tension.

    Good luck.

thanks all....i gave him a baby aspirin, and am watching him closely. Sandra...you are the best, most caring person....I notice that with every post you make....thank you!

(by the way, I'm 35 and while my mother and father live in Atlanta, I have owned my own home for a while. But I can always use my mommy, when I'm upset. Can't we all? )

    1 Baby Aspirin is fine.

You can give him another Baby Aspirin in 3 hours.

    Is he feeling any better?

Has he tried to get up and but any weight on the sore leg?

LOL! Oh geesh, I had a feeling I was going to regret saying that...PLEASE forgive me! I did check your profile for a hint, but that was no help I'm over 40 and still talk like that when I speak of my babies too And I'm a wreck when they are sick/injured, even though I'm a nurse. And you know, when we're sick or in distress, we ALL want our moms! I hope I didn't offend you. I feel so Please give Buddy a kiss and hug for me. As you can see in my sig. seniors are my passion. I hope a little rest and the aspirin will help him. I have to go out for a while but will definitely be checking back later. Hope to hear he's doing better! Sandra

P.S...Thank you so much for you kind words

the best thing for him is rest... and he should try not to put any pressure on it... in time it should heal on its own! hope he feels better!

You'll need to observe him for a while to
determine if a Trip to the White Coats is required.

After Buddy calms down, and if he'll let you...
    you can gently FEEL his hip and leg to check for any deformaties;
and to see if or WHERE he seems "tender".
Look carefully for any signs of "swelling".

Encourage him to move all the hip, leg, and foot joints -
but do NOT push or pull them yourself.

He MAY just have banged/bumped his leg or foot into the step
    and not actually *broken* anything.
Sorta like when you *stub* your toe or bang your shin into something.

Depending on what you feel, and how he acts...
you'll need to decide if X-rays are required.
