    Shelter Animals

I just fell in love with the cutest torti kitty at our local humane society. Her name is Soybean and she is so beautiful and cute. I wish I could have her so bad... She hasn't been altered, and that makes her cost only $30, but I would rather have her spayed, but that is a $30 extra. Popeye was never spayed, and I know it's only right that I would need to get Soybean spayed if I ever did get her (which I won't) but Popeye wasn't, and it wasn't any different. Yeah, she went through her month in heat, she meowed all the time, and because of our carelessness (and broken window ) she snuck out. If I had $60 I WOULD get her spayed. If she isn't though, it's not a problem for me.

Anyway, I'm not even getting her, but just wishful thinking.

    Well here's what happend.

Me-What about a cat? (I had asked earlier about a hamster... lol)

    Dad-NEVER AGAIN.

Me-But I found an adorable one at the humane society!

    Dad-NOPE.

    Me-You'd love her. (sarcastically)

Dad-It wasn't my choice to get the last cats we had.

Me-If I REMEMBER... YOU got Willow for me.

Dad- I've learned from my mistakes.

Me- What would you do if I just came home with a cat one day?

Dad- Make you pack your bags.

Me- You can't kick me out! (laughing)

    Dad- Says who?

Looks like a no to me.

If your shelter is anything like the one where I live (Bahrain) they are constantly looking for animal-loving people to help out. I have a REALLY HARD JOB - I help to socialise the kittens! Basically I just go in and play with em, and handle them so they get used to humans, and are more friendly and more likely to be homed.

I find it helps me to get my "craving" out of my system, as I really SHOULDN'T get any more cats of my own, but at least I feel like I am helping a little bit!

I guess what I am saying is that, until you have a place of your own one day, you can still be involved with animals in a BIG way, and make a BIG difference in their lives - and adopting one isn't the only way to do that!

It's also great to read your posts - you sound like you are going to be a wonderful and responsible pet owner when you are older!

Thanks Kay for my great sig & avatar!!!

    Thanks.

Well, when I'm old enough and have a car (a lot of the volunteer jobs at the Humane Society require you be 16 and have a car to transport, etc.) I am definately going to volunteer. I wouldn't mind being a dog walker:

Position Title: Volunteer - Dog Walker
When Needed: Any days Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8:30 and 4:30.
    Position
Responsibilities: Walk Shelter dogs for exercise and fresh air.

Note: Some dogs' personality is not known when they come into Shelter. Caution needs to be taken when handling these dogs. Highly suggested that a certain amount of maturity is needed. Not recommend walking two dogs together whose personality is unknown.

Minimum Age: 16 - Must have parental permission slip signed if under the age of 18.
    You need:
    Benefit:

Dogs get fresh air, human contact and exercise.
That would have to be a summer volunteer job though, I have school from 8-3.

Position Title: Volunteer - Animal Caretaker
When Needed: Any days Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8:30 and 4:30.
    Position
Responsibilities: Cut toenails, clean ears, brush, comb and bath animals.

Minimum Age: 16 - Must have parental permission slip signed if under the age of 18.
    You need:
    Benefit:

Help the animals look and feel their very best to potential adopters. Animals will be healthier and happier prepare animals going to their new home. Prefer some experience handling animals. Some animals' disposition are questionable.
    That's the job I'D prefer.

I told my parents about it and my mom's like, "You don't get PAID you know."

It makes me sick how people don't think it's worth it if you don't get paid for it. I tutor at the elementary school and I'd do it even if I DIDN'T get paid. I only get at the most $34 every two weeks. Honestly, I could care less if they stopped making it a paying job.
