Litter Box Smell??

Since I have been slowly switching Kylie to Science Diet Hairball Light formula, I have noticed her poo is 'ranker' than usual. It can bring tears to my eyes. I try to scoop when its like that of couse, the litter box is in my bedroom closet with most of my clothes.
I keep a box of baking soda and/or the carpet deoderizor in the closet to sprinkle when it get real bad. And I keep a hoard of air deoderizors or fresheners in there.
Is there anything else I can do?
I have a closed lid with a filter in it.

I keep a fan going all the time where the litter boxes are. Bassett has REALLY strong amonia pee.. it can knock you right out sometimes. Having the fan going really helps to circulate the air, so the smell doesn't build up. I also have plug in air fresheners in the litter area.

My litter box is right next to a BIG air purifier with a hepa filter!

I keep stick airfreshner on top of each hooded litterbox. Really strong odors still leak out when someone doesnt bury good. What helps in the long run I use immediate odor catcher Tidy Cat Scoopable that really helps.

Staci, is it possible to move your litter box to another area? Mine are down in the basement, although I know not everyone has a basement. Do you have a laundry room or even a bathroom where you might move it? The only reason that I am suggesting this is that the close proximity to your clothes worries me just in case they might be picking up odors that you yourself cannot detect.

The reason I say this is that sometimes we get sort of immune to the odors in our homes and, though we can't smell them, others can. A perfect example is that my husband is a smoker. When my daughter lived here she never noticed the smoky smell that must permeate my home. Now that she is married and living in a "smoke free" environment she says she can smell smoke on my clothes when I come over even though I can't smell it. (I don't even smoke so I am carrying those odors on my clothes).

We do a combination of things. We have an air purifier with a hepa filter right next to it and we mix Feline Pine with regular clay litter. The Feline Pine really helps out with the amonia smell. Cammie Cat can clear a room after she goes. And since she doesn't cover it up..... We clean both cat boxes (1 upstairs, 1 downstairs) every day so that also keeps the smell down.

The Booda Dome Clean Step Litter Box rocks! It has diminshed the smell so much. And I don't have kitty litter on my bed anymore.

I clean out the 3 litter boxes several times during an average day, that keeps smell down if someone decides to potty and dash without covering.

No Pam I don't have any other place to put the box. My house is very tiny, only 4 rooms. And Keegan gets into the box if it is somewhere else My parents enclosed a closet at the end of my bedroom for me and I had them do it on the condition that they put a hole in the wall for Kylie to go thru so its technically 'her' closet! Like I said I have a couple airfresheners in there, and I spray freshener on my clothes. I have found a new kind instead of Febreze, it is made by ALL, like the people that make All laundry soap and softener. I bought the citrus one and it smells WONDERFUL and lasts longer then Febreze. And my mom has a nose that should be bronzed And unless Kylie has just pooed my mom doesn't ever say that she smells anything, and TRUST me she would!!! But now I am going to worry that I smell like Cat pee or cat poo!!! But I wear perfume and body spray so hopefully I don't!!!!
I also have the booda dome, but it doesn't have the step thing coming out of it. I have a litter welcome mat I just bought outside of it tho. http://www.litterwelcomemat.com/litt...emat/home.html

With any luck - the *odor* will diminish as Kylie completes the transition and *adjusts* to the new food.

Mr. Boots became quite the *Stinker* when we switched to a different food for his urinary problems.

When we got to the 25% Old / 75% New point, his *poohs* became soft and Really *RANK* .
But just before the paint started to peel off the walls, things firmed up and the nasty odor all but vanished.

Pour On the Perfume ,
and hope for the Best in a week or two...

Have you tried that litter deodorizer? I sometimes use the Arm & Hammer "Fresh & Clean" litter box one and it works really well. You put it in the litter and mix it up. I add a bit each day, after I clean the boxes out.

Do you have a window in your room you can crack open a bit? We have all the litter boxes in our den and we always have that window open, at least a crack.

Yes, Kelly I use the litter box deoderizer, but the Arm and Hammer carpet deoderizer in the bigger box is the same thing, I was told. Comes in a BIGGER container, is cheaper and has different scents!!! I also use plain baking soda.
I do have a window in the closet but remember I live where we have W-I-N-T-E-R!!! he he And it doesn't really smell until she poos, so that is why I was wondering if it has to do with her food change. So for now I will keep doing what I am doing I guess!!! Sprinkling and Scooping when she is stinky!!

do you think a different light food would help. If the change has come as you've been changing the food, then maybe this isn't the best food?
My boys are amonia too. I have theirs down in the basement in a closet with a little pet door. Out of site, out of nose.

Well, I bought a trial size bag of Iams reduced calorie, and I put some in her dish and she immediatly started eating that. Then a little while later she was eating the Science Diet so .....
I hate to switch her too much, the last time I did it I had to take her to the Vet b/c she was vomiting all the time and had gastritis and had to be treated for it! She did a number 2 today and I could barely smell it, I scooped it out and its fine now.

i'm sorry and do not mean to laugh but-could this be the Bio Terror weapon we have worried about for such a long time??

When Edward gets 'wet' food he becomes very toxic.....I can tell because he goes back to re-bury his cat scat, even HE can't stand it....
