urinating all the time

We have a 17 year old tabby cat. about 6 months ago we took her to the vets because she had a really bad cough. mind you this was the first time she had ever went to a vets. she is a very healthy, spoiled kitty! they gave her a pretizone shot and she almost lost her life! she had a serious reaction to it. after we made it through that, she started acting different. she drinks water by the gallons every day now, and wants to eat all the time, she has lost weight, she rubs against anything and anyone who will let her. her litter box has to be changed every other day, because it is so saturated. we need help. we are afraid to take her back to the vets, because of what happened. can anyone give us a suggestion.

You really need to take your cat to the vets.

I know it is scary but they are the experts and will do anything they can to help her.

You can't let a loyal friend, potential suffer because you are scared.

My first thought is diabetes or kidney trouble. Trevor's first symptom of diabetes was drinking lots of water and then soaking his litterbox with gallons of water. He also peed outside of his litterbox 3 times which he had never done before. He was tested for a number of things and it came back positive for diabetes. I agree that a trip to the vet is in order ASAP. **hugs**

Yes I agree with the others, please take Kitty to the vet, that was one bad incidence, not likely to happen again, as your kitty is getting on in years, a check up would be well on the cards, as the others mentioned, which came to my thoughts also is diabetes or a UTI .

Boy, does this sound familiar. Our 17-year old kitty started doing the same thing. She had a combination of things BUT MEDICATION HELPED. She was losing weight because her thyroid had kicked into overdrive. No matter how much she ate, she could not maintain her weight. MEDICATION HELPED. She was drinking water all the time and peeing all the time and MEDICATION HELPED. Please give your little friend a chance. She has had 17 wonderfully healthy years. She needs your help (and a vet's) to give her a few more years. Tell your vet about her medicine reactions before. They can do a simple blood test to find out many things about her condition.

Your cat sounds diabetic. Has all the classic signals AND steroids can bring the symptoms up faster. (I know, that is how we found my Y.Lee's diabetes, after a dose of steroids). Please have her checked for this.

I agree with the others. Please take her to the vet asap. It sounds like diabetes to me too and as Jen said steroids can make a cat diabetic because this happened to my RB Pepper. Please keep us updated. BTW welcome to Pet Talk.

I want to thank you all for all of the information you have supplied to us. I have an appointment with a new vet tomorrow. I am still afraid to take her, but i know it is the best thing i can do for her. i will suggest for them to check her for diabetes. i will let you all know the outcome.

Diabetes was my first thought too. Take her to the vet asap please! And the next time you have a pet, please take it to the vet more often so you can get it checked to prevent these things and to get it neutered.

Well you were right! she has diabetes, other than that she is a very healthy cat. and by the way Grey is her name. I would love to send you a pic of my gorgeous kitty, but i am not able. Again thank you for all of the info. and all the kind words. this is a absolutely great forum.

I am so pleased that Grey has a treatable condition.

I know several people on Pet Talk have healthy cats with diabetes.

If you started a new thread with a Diabetes question, you could probually get some good advice here.
