    Wolf pictures

Sorry guys. I'm getting carried away here. I have been at my computer for over 5 hours scanning away! I cam across these wolf pics and thought you might enjoy them. We visited a wolf preserve in Cocolalla, ID while we were honeymooning in Coeur d'Alene. They were very sweet but wild. It was awesome!

My husband and the wolf. She was really shy..yeah right!

    What a sweetie!

The shy one of the two. Isn't he beautiful?

    My favorite one... it's a dog! it's a polar bear! No, it's a WOLF!

Simply stunning!! A couple of years ago, I was fortunate to meet several magnificent wolves at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. There is a group that runs a wolf refuge on hundreds of acres in Colorado, and they travel the country with three of their "pack" to introduce to and educate the public about wolves and why we should all support the need to protect these incredible creatures. I learned recently that the DNA profile (genotype) of the "wild" wolf and the domesticated dog STILL reamins identical and indistinguishable; from Daschund to Great Dane! Amazing! Thank you for sharing your beautiful experience!

Wolves are very beautiful but they are still misunderstood. I'd like to visit a wolf preserve and actually meet some. That Black wolf is huge!

I found this website about this wildlife refuge in Indiana. They have 19 wolves and they live in different packs. If you go to 'meet the wolves' they even have a picture of each one and sort of a biography. I really want to go there now.

mkgwolf, I was so surprised to see a pic of Tristan on the website!! Yes, wolfpark is an awsome place. That is where I did my volunteer work while I was in college! It was one of the most rewarding things I've done, especially since wolves are my fave wild animal:-) Of course I got to do the grunt work (cleaning wolf enclosures....I tell you what...it's amazing the things you find in there...ewwwweeee! But I won't go into the gruesome details right now...ha ha ha), but it's not all bad, especially since we were able to go into the enclosures with the wolves! Monty Sloan (the wolf park photographer) takes such great photos of the wolves! He has a website where you can buy his photography if you're interested.
If you have any questions about wolf park or any of the residents, don't hesitate to shoot me an email!

doggiemom, that's so neat that you stopped at the preserve on your honeymoon! How neat is that? I hadn't heard of this one. Is it very small? I just know of the WERC in Idaho.

mkgwolf, thought you might like this pic of Chetan and Apollo jawsparring. Wolves do this as sort of a "contest"...who can open their mouth wider perhaps??? LOL
These two wolves were youngsters when I was volunteering there(I was there the year they were born!). Chetan is still a part of the main pack, but Apollo has moved to a small pack called the "pillow pack", which is separate from the main pack.

Oh my gosh... your additional wolf pics are incredible! The preserve we went to was very small. They would only bring in 2 or 3 wolves at a time. It is just a small family owned store...well, here is a write-up about them.... sorry it's long.

    ------
The Wolf People Who Run With the Pack
    -------------------------------------
Bill and Nancy Taylor were wolf people long before they became the Wolf People. But blending their love of wolves with their backgrounds in business came naturally.

Like many others, the Taylors came to Sandpoint looking for a better quality of life. They brought with them their beautiful, shy pet wolves Cochise and Cherish.

At first, Bill sold real estate and was a musician. Nancy worked in insurance. But about two years ago, an itch to start a business led them to start "jamming" on business ideas. They liked the idea of marketing T-shirts and the perfect design was as close as their back yard. With Cochise and Cherish as models, they hired artists to make renditions for their first T-Shirt design.

And so was born Wolf People, retailers of fine wolf merchandise. The Taylors have since developed more gifts and garments with wolf motifs, and a year ago they put them into a mail-order catalog. Their second catalog will be published for the '95 holiday season.

They've also opened a retail store in Cocollala, where they bring two of their wolves to the store every day. They've found a rich vein of interest in their wolf-oriented merchandise.

"The wolf has been popular for a long time. It's not just a fad," Nancy says. The Taylors' own interest in the animals shows that. They've owned wolves and wolf-hybrids for eight years. Today, their pack has grown to nine of them.

Owning Wolf People helps the Taylors promote responsible ownership of wolves. They've installed a hotline to provide facts and tips on care, and are developing a video. Nancy was the subject of an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation for a 1991 special entitled "Dogs." More recently, their female wolf-hybrid Lona Akee was an "actress" for the film Cry of the White Wolf, due out soon.

Nancy also established the Inland Empire Wolf Association, of which she currently serves as the president. The group has grown to 40 members.

"We try to prevent backyard breeding situations," Nancy says. "Because of the lack of understanding of wolves they're one-owner dogs they often get passed on and then get abused and the situation gets worse and worse."

Ok, I just had to post this pic of Socrates that Monty Sloan took in 1993, it's a classic at Wolf Park and....it cracks me up! He's about 7 months old in this picture...
Now, that's not something you see everyday! LOL
