    ham bones

Does anyone know if you can give dogs the large whole ham leg bones? I know that chicken bones are definitely a no-no, but wasn't sure about ham. I have a dog patiently waiting, and hoping!

Personally, I think it is ok. It has been years since I cooked a whole ham, so my girls have never experienced it, but I certainly have shared them in the past with no problems. I can see the drool now!

The only problem is the high amount of salt. As a very rare treat it shouldn't be a problem. Make sure there is loads of water available and that there is at least a three to four week gap between bones.
    Personally I wouldn't.

Many years ago, I gave my Great Pyrenees (@Rainbow Bridge now) a ham bone. To my great surprise, she devoured the whole thing in 20 minutes. I wasn't watching her carefully because I never thought she could eat it so fast!! No ill effects became of it though, but I never gave her another bone again.

None of mine ever ate them so quickly, but I agree with Carrie, you need to be cautious and do it on a very rare occassion.

Thanks so much! I just couldn't throw it away without guilt, until I was sure there may be a problem and the 'maybe's' are what we want to avoid. So as long as she doesn't look at me until we are safely outside in the garbage, we'll be ok.
