which would be best? little girl or boy?

Hello! I am the mom of sammy,a 10 month old sweet kitty, who will turn 1 year on the fourth of July! He has been recently neutered, (1 week ago), and I am considering getting him a little playmate. I'm not sure if a girl, or boy would be best. I'm wondering if sammy feels he's the king of his "castle" and maybe a girl would be best? He's strictly an indoor kitty, and I'm sure he would love a little friend! (mommy would too!) any advice?

Hi and welcome to Pettalk! i know there are probably other people here who have more knowledge and more cats on this subject that can help you...but i'll give my 2 cents worth

I think since your cat is still young, introducing a male would probably not be a problem. And if your cat is layed back enough, it may not even be a problem once he was older. My mom has a full grown adult male and introduced a male kitten later on and they are the best of friends now. I had a female first and introduced a male and they are the best of friends now too. In both of these situations, the cats are super friendly. From what i understand, females can be more territorial, if they are the first cat in the house and a second cat is introduced...but i guess there is also the thing of male dominace. But if your cat is layed back and friendly...you would probably be fine either way. I think i have heard more often, that 2 females can actually be harder to introduce to eah other than males.

ANyway, congrats on your cat and good luck with your next one...it is so nice for them to have a playmate...i am glad we got a second one!

Hi Lorraine and welcome to Pet Talk. I have 3 males and they get along fairly well together. Males usually do better in a multi-cat household since females seem to be more territorial. Since your male cat is still fairly young, I think that either a male or a female cat would do well. Like Christiansmommy said it all depends on your current cats behavior. If he's very easy going and laid back then he'll probably get along with either males or females. I would also recommend that the new cat be younger than him so he doesn't feel as threatened by it.

From my own experience I've found that males are more lovey dovey and easy going but there are always exceptions. I've also always introduced a younger cat to my household so that the other cats don't feel as threatened and so the alpha cat can retain his status. I'm sure you'll receive many other great responses because there are many knowledgeable people here. Good luck with whatever sex you decide. Please keep us updated.

    Welcome to Pet Talk Lorraine.

What ever the rules there are always exceptions.

I would suggest going to your local shelter and waiting for a friendly kitten to chose you (whatever the sex)

I agree, I think it more depends on the personality...

Welcome to Pet Talk! I don't think it really matters if you get a boy or a girl. I agree with what the others said, go to a shelter and let one pick you. I'm looking forward to hearing stories about your new little one and of course seeing pictures.

Welcome. I am glad that you are considering getting another cat. There is always room for one more, right? I have always had better luck with males. Females seem to be more difficult to integrate with each other (or with males for that matter). But as others have said, there are always exceptions. My first 2 cats were females and they got along as the best of friends right from day 3 (days 1 and 2 were kinda touchy). Good luck with your choice.

All I can tell you is that I have two boys and they are best of friends.

Congrats on your new addition. Two is always better than one! I could watch my boys play all day- they're better than tv.

Yes i think its just the luck of the draw really, from my experience two boys did not work out, but now i have a girl and boy its better, but then lexie is so sweet natured and laid back, probably why, so it does really depend on their nature, anyhow u go for it, good luck with your choosing, post pics when u get the kitty
