Which is why you should NEVER make an assumption about a stray dog and NEVER attempt to ILLEGALLY put the dog in a rescue instead of returning him to his rightful owners. What if your dog escaped, was on the run for a couple of weeks and someone found him dirty and skinny and assumed you didn't deserve him back?

Stealing a dog is against the law, no matter what the circumstances.

i agree with RDM...it isnt a very considerate thing to do to try and pawn off someones beloved pet...if i lost my dog, i would probably be at the point of suicide....u had no idea how long that dog was running around for, and maybe he wasnt neutered for a reason (ie stud dog, religious beliefs). im glad that u are thinking of the welfare of the akita, but things like this can easily be solved in a courtroom, and shouldnt be left in the hands of someone who has no idea what the other side of the story is...im sorry to say all that cuz i dont want to be mean, but stealing is wrong.

regardless of the reason, that dog should have been neutered. So, am I to assume that if the owners were neglectful that the dog still should have gone back to them? That's all that we were saying.

I believe the dog has been returned to his owner, and she was just trying to think of the welfare of the dog--everything worked out just fine.

I also agree with RDM. And I don't want to sound mean either. Lalinia was doing a good thing to try and help this poor dog and it all turned good. But, I guess sometimes we as animal lovers may be in this some situation and the dog/cat may not be a stray. Just about anybody's pet at one time or another could get loose and we don't know the situation as to why the pet is shabby or not spayed/neutered etc. I would be heart broken if it happened to me.

I also need to say that I didn't mean the pet should be just left on the street. LOL I meant to try and find the owner if possible first.

My little Ripley that I just adopted on 1/16 was at a shelter because he was found roaming. He was in deplorable condition. He is a poodle and he had mats all over him. In fact, his mats were matted. He had briers (sp?) sticking into his fur and he was skinny and also not neutered. After the appropriate waiting period he was free to be mine. YAY! My son asked me an interesting question the other night. He said, "Mom if you found out who Ripley's owners were and they were devastated would you give him back?" I thought only briefly about that and said that if it could be proved to me that he had been on his own for a while and that was the explanation for his condition I would give him back. **GULP** It is hard for me to even imagine doing this as I already love him so and his little personality is so sweet. I do feel, though, that if a similar thing had happened to me (i.e., Bella or Ripley were found roaming somehow) I would want the same consideration.

Another good reason to microchip your dog, make sure he/she is wearing a collar with identification and have them neutered/spayed, which might help to cut down on that wandering factor too!

Lalania, I'm glad this worked out the way it did.
