While Amy and I were eating sunflower seeds the past few days - she's been making fun of me for eating the shell and all.
I personally think it's a waste to just eat the seed and discard the shell. The shell is what has all of the flavor, plus it's crunchy goodness. I chew them up completely and then swallow.
Amy looks like a fool while picking the shell out of her mouth and having to discard it somewhere.
Anywho, How does everyone else eat it? Are there any "weirdos" like me out there?
I crack the shell open and then eat the seed inside.

I LOVE sunflower seeds. When I'm bored I take the shell off- it is a bit of a time waster (:o I know.... I have no life:o ) but I do enjoy eating the shell.

I eat the shells more than the seeds. I like the pre-shelled honey roasted most.

you take a bunch and stuff them in your mouth.
You cringe at all the salt, move them around in your cheeks, like a chipmuck, then use your tongue to position one into place,
crack the shell with your teeth, spit the shell out and then eat the seed.
Repeat as necessary.;)
I shell them my self and I only eat seeds..I´ve tried eating all, but then my stomach didnt feel well :D lol
I only eat the seed and spit the shell out. My husband eats the whole thing.

I eat the seed only. Dante, my conure, absolutely loves cracking them open, but won't eat the seed. So I'll just put a handful of seeds in front of him... and in 30 seconds, no more shells. ;)
I have never tasted one! I am not able to eat anything like that, no nuts, seed of any roughage... :(

i either eat the shell or eat the seed but keep the shell in my mouth til the salt is gone.
I crack 'em open and eat the seeds...but if I'm too lazy, I'll eat the whole thing!;)
I take the lazy way out and buy the ones that are already shelled.:p

Summer is the time for eating things like sunflower seeds and pistachios - throwing the seeds on the ground. I also like sunflower seeds already shelled - so good sprinkled into salads:D

I think eating the shells is yucky .... like eating tree bark.
Same as Richard, except I love the salt. :) I stick maybe ten or so in at a time, crack them open with my molars, eat the seed and spit the shell out.
When I was little I didn't know you didn't have to eat the shell. My aunt told me that eating the shell was bad for you and could make you sick, so I was so paranoid after that lol. I don't even like the shell anymore. It tastes bad to me, and sometimes when you swallow it, the chunks will scratch your throat. It also gets caught in my teeth.
I crack the shell open, throw it away, and eat the seed. Popcorn and Muffin crack it open, eat the seed, then go back and chew on the shell too. :p He he he...
I suck the salt off the shell, crack it open and eat the seed. I have never tried to eat the shell.
I eat the seed and spit out the shell. When I was a kid I was told that eating the shell could cause your appendix to burst, so being scared at even the thought of a doctor I never ever ate the shells. Actually I think the story was told about how a friend's friend had a burst appendix and when they went to remove it they found nothing but sunflower shells in it! I know it was a myth, but it was enough to scare me for life!
