Pepper Threw Up Blood & May Be Much Sicker Than I Relalized

Hi everyone. As many of you know Pepper has been throwing up food and sometimes liquid. Well this morning he threw up blood. :( It's very hard for me to talk about this because I'm very upset right now. I called the vet and he told me to bring him in asap. I brought him in and he's also running a fever. His temperature was 106 degrees. When he's at the vet it usually runs between 102 and 103 because he becomes very stressed. He has also lost another pound so he now weighs about 15lbs. He may have an ulcer or it could be pancreatitus or he may have a polup or tumor in his stomach.:( I stopped giving him the prednisolone pills because this is will aggrevate his stomach and make it worse. The vet gave him some IV fluids and an injection of some kind of antibiotic. He's also on 3 kinds of pills for the next 5 days. He's on flagyl (metronidazole) 1 pill 2 times a day, carafate to help sooth his stomach 1/2 pill 2 times a day, and reglan 1 pill 2-3 times a day for nausea. I'm also supposed to feed him small amounts of food every few hours. He also had another blood test which includes a thyroid and some kind of test for his pancreas. I should get the results later today or tomorrow morning. He still needs another type of pancreas test but he must fast for this so we'll wait on that for now. He may also need to have an ultrasound. There are a few other more invasive tests that he may need to but I already told the vet that I really don't want to put him through these since he's been through so much already. I called my boss and told him that I wouldn't be in today and I starting crying since it's very hard for me to talk about. He said he understands and to do whatever I need to do. Please say some prayers for my poor Pepper. He's been through so much. Thank you.

Oh Tracey, I'm so very sorry to hear that Pepper is so ill! :( I hope it's nothing serious and that these new pills will help! I can imagine what you're going through, - luckily your boss understands!

I don't know much about the medicine he's getting, apart from Prednisolone and I'm I sure it's a good idea to get him off these!!

Let him get some rest in calm surroundings (I bet you already do) and make sure he gets some liquid.

We'll all keep our fingers and paws crossed for dear Pepper.

I'm glad your boss is so understanding - helps your stress level a bit. Give the others a hug and smooch from me because I'm sure they know something is going on with their brother.

Oh Darn :( Oh Darn :( Sweet Pepper. it is such a shame when our cats become ill, we can't understand what they are going through for they cannot talk and let us know. We'd like to just take all of their illness and give it to ourselves. First I found out about Bassett, and now Pepper. I wish i could give you some medical advice but it seems your vet has done that already. You seem very educated on what Pepper needs, and that is a sign of a true and caring doctor. Let's all keep our paws crossed that Pepper's doctor can fix him back up in no time. Your mommy loves you Pepper, and your two brothers two. You will get over your illness as soon as possible :)

Oh my goodness!! I was hoping things were getting better for dear Pepper! Please know that you and Pepper are in my thoughts and prayers too. I know how scary it is to have a furbaby throw up blood. I am glad that your boss was understanding in this situation. My heart goes out to you! I certainly hope this thing can be treated and that Pepper will get better. Here's an update on Pepper. The vet called me tonight with his test results. He has some kind of infection because his white blood cell count is up to 50,000 and it should only be between 12-15,000. :( His liver panel is also elevated but this could be due to his vomiting. I'm taking him back to the vet tomorrow morning so they can give him antibiotics intraveinously as well as his 3 other pills. He'll be there all day so I know he's in good hands. I sure hope that this works. Today he slept most of the day and he cried a lot like he was in pain. :( He doesn't have any appetite either but if I felt as bad as he does I wouldn't either. Thanks for all the prayers and positive energy coming his way. I'd also like to thank AmberLee for stopping by and giving Pepper and I some positive energy.

Fingers crossed that the Reiki helped. He's looking good: sure hope he's feeling better soon.

(Note: Their new cat tree is AWESOME!! Hope he's up to exploring it very, very soon.)

If they now know that it is an infection, that should be the first step toward recovery. All prayers still coming your way.

Oh, Pepper, at least they know you have some kind of infection - that's a good start anyway. Now if they could just figure out what that infection is they could work on really getting you all fixed up. Be good at the white coats today because they're just trying to make you feel better.

I know that it is hard to watch our furkids in pain or suffering, but at least the white coats have determined that it is an infection. This means that it is treatable and the metronidazole is a VERY powerful drug. The lack of appetite is probably related to the metronidazole. One of it's side effects is severe nausea and vomiting and a lack of appetite.

Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes. I just found out today that Pepper has diabetes. It may be only temporary though because the cortizone and prednisolone can cause his glucose level to increase. I have to feed him a special diabetic diet 2 times a day and then give him an insulin injection after he eats. If he's weak, shaky, not eating, having seizures, or panting then I don't give him any insulin. I also have to put glucose strips in the litterboxes to monitor his glucose level and I also need to monitor his water consumption. He goes back to the vet on Friday morning for an all day glucose testing and back on Monday morning for an ultrasound. The specialist needs to look at his pancreas, stomach, and liver to find out whats going on there. I sure hope that his diabetes is only temporary or if it's not that we can find the right amount of insulin to keep his glucose level balanced. I also hope that the ultrasound will tell us something too. Pepper's been through too much lately and I just hate to see him not feeling well.

Tracey, Let me tell you what I know about the diabetes.
My Y.Lee developed it. His symptoms also started after a dose of a steroid medication. The steroid tends to allow other low lying diseases to surface. He most likely was already getting the diabetes, but the symptoms were too subtle to be diagnosed. Cats are the only species that can overcome diabetes. (Y.Lee, did not).:( BUT ! Y.Lee never had the throwing up. So I truely believe that something else is also going on. The shots, the urine testing, the special food, they are all worth it, but He will have to go through a whole lot of testing to try to control his blood sugar level. Many all day trips to the vet, until the correct dosage can be found.
Now, could you tell me what else is going on? I am afraid I have lost track of the other diagnosis. Last I remember he was being treated for an infection.

It's such a pity that these poor furkids can never tell us what they really feel. So it is so complicated to find out whether it is one disease or 2 or even more.
I hope that one after onother can be healed. Poor Pepper.

I am also hoping that Pepper's diabetes is transient and will improve within the next couple of weeks. I also hope that there is will be no problems in controlling the diabetes.

Now Pepper you be a good little kitty and try to do what you mommy needs you to do ;)
