Jamie's Spay Day - Thoughts and Prayers for a nervous mom!!

Arrghh I know it's a "routine" surgery but in school we've been talking a lot about routine anesthesia deaths in perfectly healthy animals who went under for routine procedures and I'm a little freaked out and worried. So please think of us tomorrow and pray/send good vibes/keep us in your thoughts/whatever that she makes it through OK!

That's like my worst nightmare, I can't imagine if that happened and I wasn't there. Oh man I'm starting to freak out :( She's probably gonna handle this better than me, LOL

However a bright side is the funny pictures of her wearing an e-collar that are sure to follow... :)

I will pray everything goes well. :) (((HUGS))) please keep us updated how it goes! I am sure everything will go just fine. :) She'll probably be very sore for awhile though but she'll be just fine!

awwww Jamie...I just sent you a bone on your dogster page as a good luck token :) You will be fine! And your Mom will be fine too :) Rent a good movie or do whatever you can do to distract yourself for a few hours...don't let that anxiety creep into your head...If I sound like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I'm already having anxiety about Sunny getting spayed in 6 months :) :) :)

Hehe personally I'm just glad its getting done and over with; the in-laws are paying for it because hubby is putting in OT with them at work so it all evens out. I'll have school to keep me occupied tomorrow, I hope so anyway; I do have a big test over the blood flow tomorrow so I'll just study, study, study and by the time I take the test she should be done!

I was nervous but she of course did awesome!!

They also had to remove a fatty deposit (well I discovered it last night and asked them to ask the vet about it this morning). They said it was an old hernia from her umbilical cord, so for an extra $50 removed and analyzed it to make sure it wasn't cancerous and what have you. So she was under for twice as long as my in-laws dog, Angel, who was spayed today as well.

So she has two littttttle incisions on her abdomen and she's completely out of it still, she's walking funny like she's sore and won't drink but it's only been a few hours, she's probably still drowsy and out of it from the anesthesia.

But must say, it's so adorable that she's out of it, she just wants to be around us and is very lovey hehe

She's pretty much back to her old self today!!

Her "umbilical hernia" incision was "leaking" fluid but I'm sure it's just from her licking the area and/or running around outside (which I told her NOT to do... but you try telling an Aussie not to run!!). It isn't red and irritated and it looks GREAT so far and she isn't even that interested in licking it a whole lot so hopefully she heals soon!

Unlike Charlie, he licked and scratched his to the point it got infected and was raw for... probably a good two months we had to deal with his. Even with an e-collar, he would break or rip off every one I could get on him and it was bad ><

Can't you keep her on leash?? :confused: She really shouldn't be running around, whether she feels like it or not. A spay is a pretty major surgery. The external incision's healing is important, but it's all the internal sutures you need to worry about. The outside usually heals quickly.
I dunno, if it were me and my dog she would only be going outside on leash.

Oh, don't worry, even if she's on a leash she'd be doing the same thing anyway. She isn't running laps around the yard if that's what you're thinking haha. We're being so cautious we didn't even let her jump on or off the bed but picked her up instead.

She's ok today, it wasn't anything major EXCEPT NOW I examined her incision from the spay and theres a lump underneath. Gonna call the vet tomorrow and ask about it. Both seem to be healing ok, but this lump wasn't there before her spay as I palpated her abdomen the night prior (that's how I found the fatty deposit).

EDIT: I should reiterate to include when I mentioned "running" in my previous post, I'd meant running to a spot to pee, and you know I guess it would even be more of a "trot" versus run if anything

I have to agree! My dogs were leashed for nearly two weeks after being fixed. The knot could be fluid build up which occurs from too much activity, please make sure you talk to the vet. It's not easy keeping them leashed, it's a living he!!, but it is safest.;)

Guys, don't worry I'm not stupid... I know to limit her activity, and that's exactly what I'm doing. She stays in our bedroom all day away from the other animals and only goes outside supervised. Her activity level now versus last week is close to none.

Also tried calling the vet but they were closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Well, the receptionist is there but no vets (and they don't have techs, its a very small clinic). I left a message and will be calling again Monday. She is in no pain and the incision is healing beautifully.

Some spayed kitties get a hernia...they are easily fixed, though it means another Sir Jury. You mentioned a hernia incision...well, mebbe another one showed up!

I am so glad everything went well. :) yeah umbilical hernias can cause mental problems, it did with a catahoula named Kavu we adopted out where I work. he's awesome but he's always been slow but I love him. :D
