Why dogs shouldn't eat bees (again, page 3)

I took the dogs for a walk today, on our way back a bee flew in front of us and *snap* Nebo made a meal out of it. :rolleyes: The bee had its revenge and stung the inside of his upper lip. Now he looks like this:

He's been stung before, he always swells up, but nothing else has ever happened. I'm just keeping an eye on him, hopefully the swelling will be gone by morning. He acts fine, he ate his dinner and has been playing with Keva.

Do you think the poor guy has learned his lesson that bees are not edible? Not likely...

Nebooooo...no more bees! Sherman tries to catch them, but so far has only been stung from stepping on one. I'm going to post your picture for him to see. *kisses Bebo's nose* Hope you feel better soon, sweetie!

First Shepherd Casey (RB :( ) was an Award-Winning Bee *Snapper* from
puppy-hood!
She'd *stalk* one, bob & weave to get her distance just right, then
*lunge* and **ker-SNAPP**, followed by a rather un-lady-like *pa-TOOIE*
as the recently deceased Bee, Wasp, Hornet, or Fly bit the dust. ;)

She must have wiped out hundreds of winged-critters in her lifetime; and
suffered very few retaliations by her victims.
But I could always tell when she ran into a "tuff one" ... instead of the normal
"single" *ker-SNAPP* ...
there'd be a machine-gun style rapid fire *SNAPPIN*, and she'd have her lips
curled up as far as they'd go into a SUPER-smile. :eek:

If she *Yipped* in the process - she got nailed ... and would make certain
she gave the offending beast a second or third *CHOMP* to make sure.

She did develop Chipmunk Cheeks on occasion, just like Nebo.
She managed a "sour look" very similar to Nebo's!

Poor Nebo. I doubt it will teach him not to mess with bees though. ;) Lacey got stung on her paw by a bee last summer, she was limping for a few days. Layla, I do believe will have a few encounters with bees this summer.I do have benadryl in the cupboard. :rolleyes:

Oh Nebo, did you at least ENJOY it?

As a kid, my dog Princess loved bumble bees. She tried yellow jackets, which we had a lot as we had apple trees. (The yellow jackets come after the dropped apples.) She learned to pass them up for the fat juicy bumble bees, he he!

Aww! Poor Nebo! I hope he feels better soon, what a big cheek he has now.

Zoey still catches bee's after being stung a billion times, I guess it's worth the pain.

Here we go again.... :rolleyes: This was about a week ago, she's fine now. I wonder how many pictures like this I'll have by the end of summer. A few butterflies have lost their lives to her too, at least they don't make her face swell up though!

LOL!!! My mom just went through this with her Sheltie Timmy!! He got it on the end of the nose tho, and mom had to pull out the stinger. He still went after more!! :rolleyes:

Both my pups snap at all flying bugs & I hate it. I fear they could get
a sting in their throat & if it got swollen, they couldn't breath. Don't know
if it's logical to think that, but I do.

I know, I have a groomer customer that has a dog that almost died because of a bee sting. He had a severe reaction. Just like people, some dogs have a much worse reaction to bee stings than others. Smokey (RB) went after bees and never had anything even swell up. My dogs have never had anything more than swelling in the area of the sting, I keep predisone on hand to give them when it happens. We ended up taking Syd to the emergency vet one night because her entire head and throat were swollen (she wasn't having trouble breathing at all though). The last time Nebo ate a bee it was during a walk, it flew in front and *snap* it was gone. Trust me, if I could stop them from eating bees, I would, but its not really possible. They are in the house when I'm not home, they are only out in the yard when I'm home.

Poor Keva, please don't eat bees. I've always got Benadryl on hand here and just went out yesterday to buy a smaller dosage for Jake, just in case.:rolleyes:

Tsk Tsk says RB Cody from above...

A master bee snapper he was! Until the one time he got bit hard. Acted kind of funny a few hours later and off to the vet. Had to take Benydral and get a shot. He had a bad reaction. Did it stop him? Did he learn his lesson? Yeah, right. Kept good, ole' reliable Benydral on hand.

Not that I want onlookers to think your dogs are dangerous...but would some kind of gentle muzzle keep them from snapping at bees?

probably not b/c those muzzles allow them to bark and drink usually and breath open mouthed - just right for snapping at buzzzying things
seems like it would be a lot of expense and work for that -
but as long as neither dog develops a full blown anaphlactic reaction to bee stings.....

NEBO and KEVA BEES are for HONEY Making not EATING!!

There's 2 distinct lumps so I think she got it twice. I pulled a stinger out of one of them. I keep a supply of prednisone on hand just for this purpose.
