I'm glad your sweet girl is back home. Hope she recovers nicely and is back to her normal happy self soon!
She's drinking A LOT of water. Should I let her keep drinking or should I limit her? I imagine she didn't drink all day yesterday so she's thirsty...but I'm worried if she drinks too much she'll bloat?
I filled her bowl up with fresh water just before she came home around 9:30 (it's 11ish now) and she's already finished the bowl. I believe it's a 16 oz bowl. I filled it up again and she's still drinking.
I'm wondering if because he tummy hurts she might think it's because she's thirsty? I gave her a little food in case she's hungry. I forgot to ask if they fed her but I'm pretty sure they did.
I'm not sure, but if it was me, I'd give her a little water at a time for today.
I would not over-think this whole process. Relax a little. Give her some room and time to adjust to the change in her body. This is the first time she's experiencing discomfort and confusion. She may still be under the influence of the medications. If they let her leave, and she stays fairly quiet, just let her be and YOU try to relax. Often pets can sense when you are out of whack so try to relax a little.
She was without water for quite a few hours so I think she may be trying to catch up on the water intake.
Why not curl up and read a book, with her ..... watch a little TV. She and YOU need to relax and get some rest.
I am sure she will be fine.
Yeah, sorry to be so paranoid. I'm not sure why I'm so uptight when it comes to her. My BF says the same thing, I need to stop over thinking it. I guess I've had a very unlucky year with pets, I lost 2 precious babies within 3 months of each other. It really wasn't that long ago. I'd do anything to keep Clover safe. I just sound a little crazy
Clover is probably just thirsty and there's nothing wrong. I know we all worry about our pets. I recall when LilGirl was spayed (such a little dog) and when I picked her up at vet, she was "out of it" because she was still very groggy. I brought her home and I think I checked on her every hour or two during the night. She would whimper a little bit from being uncomfy and I felt so bad for her but I knew she needed to be spayed and she would be ok.
I'm sure all is alright with your sweet dog. Someone suggested you curl up and read a book or watch tv with her and RELAX (smile)... sounds like good advice. Have a good day! Kay in NC
It is so normal to worry about their welfare. We wouldn't be good pet owners if we didn't have a little worry in our day about them and what could go wrong.
Each day she will feel better and you will wonder why you ever worried. I suspect she will be wanting to run and play by Monday.
Will you need to return to have her sutures removed or are they the self-dissolving kind? Prue had the self-dissolving kind so she didn't even need a followup appointment. It was effortless for us. Thank goodness.
So worry all you want.... we all did it but probably didn't let others know!;)
She will be fine. Just wait!:D
You are not being paranoid, you are a good dog owner. I would be concerned if you didn't worry about her. :) How is she today?
She has the dissolving ones. So she doesn't need to go back in.
She's actually doing well. She slept for most of today. Into the evening she's getting more energetic and keeps bringing me her rope toy asking "lets tug, ok?" She's pretty much her normal self. She just wants to play. It's going to be SO hard keeping her calm for a week!
She's still incredibly thirsty though. Anytime I fill her bowl she just drinks it all. I let her drink a lot earlier but I'm holding back a little now. Letting her have little drinks here and there instead of gulping it all at once.
She's having a little difficulty going to the washroom. She usually ends up yelping a lot. It's very sad D:
Is it sad I'm making this out to sound like it was this huge complicated surgery? I think I'd explode from the stress if it was lol.
I'll take some pictures of her tomorrow :D
Well a spay is a big surgery, you are not over reacting atleast I don't think so. :) It will probably hurt for her to go to the bathroom for a bit. She is probably still in a bit of pain but should be ok in time. :) Also, she is probably really thirsty because the anestetics makes their tongues really dry and can cause them to thirst excessively but don't let her have too much or she will be throwing it up. :) Just make to keep her hydrated though.
Yay, Clover! I'm so glad to read the surgery is over and you are home and recovering! Gentle hug for you, sweety :)
You are very welcome she will be back to her old self in no time. :D
Perhaps I'm just being paranoid again, but is this normal? She was fine all night. I took her water up while she slept, and as I said through the evening I'd been monitoring how much water she had.
This morning she threw up 5 times. All of her food. Looks like she didn't even chew it.
She seems fine other then that. I'm just worried there is some reason she may be throwing up. What do you think?
Also, she is kinda coughing a little bit here and there.
She threw up 2 more times. She actually seems sick now...The vet is closed. I'm worried it's bloat or something...
She's thrown up more and is now shaking. I called the ER vet like 40 mins ago and I'm getting very impatient. I'm giving them 5-10 mins before I call another vet. Will they actually throw up if they have bloat or just attempt to?
Are you waiting for the EMG vet to call back? Did they give you any advice as to whether you should bring her in?
Is she taking pain meds, maybe they're making her sick?
If it was bloat, she would have had unsuccessful vomiting with maybe foam or mucous coming up.
Could be the pain medicines.
I hope she is okay though, let us know how she is doing when you get a chance!
I'm praying for Clover. I suppose you took her to the vet as you haven't got back on PT.
Some dogs do throw up after surgery. But she shouldn't be throwing up so much. Is she taking any meds? I would take her to the vet, keep caling the E-vet.
I just got home from the ER vet. I ended up going to the vet college because it took over an hour for my vet to call. I can't tell you how upset I was. (It was over an hour but I had already taken her into the college by this point)
They were very nice. It just took FOREVER. 4 hours + we were there.
We still have no idea what's wrong. They feel she's reacting to the pain from her spay. She said she was shocked to find out they didn't give me pain meds for her. I even asked them for some like you guys suggested but they told me they gave her an injection and she'd be fine. I figured they knew what they were talking about.
I was also very upset to find out my vets emergency people are ONLY large animal vets. This really isn't acceptable. I'd love to go to the college but they're double the price. It costs over 200 for an x-ray where my clinic is 100.
The bill was racking up and I was very upset because I had no idea what was wrong, what to do, etc. I'd pay anything for her if she needs it. Problem is you have to pay when you take her home, there is no pay over time. (they do at my vet) They were talking about 600 or 700 to keep her over night for fluids and x-ray. I honestly do not have that money right now :( We just paid 250 for her spay, it's almost x-mas, I still can't find a job. Anyway the vet student that was helping the vet saw how upset I was and said "Oh, we can just take some blood, that the vet knows nothing about, and say it's for research" Basically they gave us the blood work for free and said we can pay for the medication later.
Blood work came back perfectly normal. They feel she is just in a lot of pain from the surgery. Blood work would say if she was bleeding or anything. They gave her meds to stop her from vomiting and pain meds. Also so more pain meds to take home in case we feel she needs it.
She probably threw up 10-15 times in only a few hours. She's still shaking so I have her wrapped up in a blanket and she's resting peacefully right now.
They said if she doesn't throw up anymore (she shouldn't with the meds) then she's likely just fine and was just in a lot of pain. If she continues to throw up then she's likely very sick.
I'm keeping her in my sight all day and I'll likely stay up all night to be sure she's safe. The college has people there 24 hrs so they said call back for anything at all and I can take her back in right away if need be.
I'm very upset with my vet. In the past I've always had any pet surgery done at the college. But my current vet was very good to me in my time of need with my last 2 babies who passed away that I felt she was trustworthy.
I'm so sorry you're having such a hard time with this. I hope its just pain/pain meds making her sick. I had to take a large dose of ibuprofin once before finding out I don't tolerate it. I ended up being sick all weekend.
Its not uncommon for vets to be mostly large animal practice. That's where they make their money. A person with a herd of 100 cows used for meat and milk spends a lot more on care than a person with a companion dog. General vet school is mostly about the big animals and then the smaller animal courses are more elective. The best care is going to come from a specialist over a normal vet.
Well I certainly hope she feels better. :) Just keep her hydrated. (((hugs)))
How long has she been without water? You can go get some plain pedialyte and mix it with water and put it in a syringe and give it to her in her mouth. Hydration is very important, especially since she is vomiting. It makes them really dehydrated. You can also give her some wet dog food, there is a little water content in that. I hope your baby feels better soon, sorry she is sick. :(
Sona I am so sorry to read about Clover. Keeping her hydrated is very important. When I had Missy spayed 4 years ago her veterinary told us not to give her any solids for a good 48 hours after the surgery but plenty of water. She also had pain medicine. On the third day we gave her some solids & she threw them up. By the fourth day she held her solids down. The anesthesia takes a time to wear off & even humans can get sick from it. Peeing is a lot easier then having a bowel movement which can sometimes cause straining too. I am sorry you & Clover are having to go through this. I was a nervous wreck before, during, & after Missy's surgery. (((HUGS))) for you both.
Poor Clover :(.
I'm kind of surprised the vet didn't give you pain meds either. Our vet didn't give Lily any when she was spayed also, saying she didn't need it, but I'm pretty sure she could have used them too. It's a major surgery for goodness sakes!
I hope it is only the pain that she is reacting to and she settles down and rests easy.
Give her some hugs from all of us PTers and both of you relax and try to take things easy. (((HUGS)))
Good advice. There's no need to rush with solid food right away, in fact
it could cause her to throw up. Water is reasonable if she is already awake.
It does take time for the anesthesia to leave her system. I too am surprised
they didn't send home a least a few pain pills for her.
They told us she can resume normal eating when I took her home :( I've been sick all day with worry. She's not showing any interest in anything right now. She won't drink. I don't want to force her. She seems fairly comfortable sleeping. She's wrapped in a warm blanket cause she was cold. I just wish it was tomorrow so if she needs more tests I can get her in. I hate not knowing if she's ok. They said it's normal for her to be so sleepy with the meds they gave her...
Her poor little body probably needs to rest from being sick. If she doesn't eat in the morning, I would take her to the vet. You could always boil a tiny it of chicken and rice for her. They actually give pain medicine in the anestetics, not all vets send them home with pain medicine. I hope she is better soon.
So sorry to hear of the hard time your having with Clover. I'm very surprised that they did not give her pain meds. I would also do the pedialyte thing Krista mentioned. Keeping her hydrated is very important. Hope everythings okay with her, keep us updated!
I took her out a few hours ago to pee. She seems weak and is having a little trouble moving around like she's in pain. She did have a good drink of water. I took her out and she peed and tried to poo. She's having a little trouble with the poo. I just took her out again and she seems very uncomfortable moving around and again tried to poo and not much came out. She had another drink and is laying down but is looking around. I'm worried she's in pain? Maybe she got a bone stuck in her some where. She was chewing last night and half of it is gone. Would I know it if she's really sick cause of the bone stuck in her? The vet said she'd try to throw up even with the anti-throw up meds if she has that problem. I'm just concerned because she just looks very sick and worried. (can dogs worry? It sure looks like worry to me)
If it's a bone stuck in her, will she be ok over night? I don't want her to stop breathing over night while I'm sleeping or something....
If a bone is stuck in her and it won't come out, she could very well have blockage and I would take her in right away for it as blockage can be fatal. Only a vet would be able to tell you if she has a blockage though with x-rays.
The thing is I don't know if it's a blockage. I asked the vet about it and she says she doesn't think she does but she can't say for sure. She did blood work to be sure she wasn't bleeding anywhere. She's not. She pood fine this morning, and she did poo some this evening. She wouldn't be able to if she was blocked?
Here are signs of blockage and you can see if she is showing signs. But I would take her to the vet, anyways first thing tomorrow.
