Bon bit me (not feeling so blue any more!)

:eek: Bless your heart Anna! I cant begin to imagine how much that must hurt. I hate dog fights. I've had to deal with a couple bewteen Ebony and Jada. Glacier had given me some wonderful info on what to do if a dog fight should happen. I'm so thankful she did that because it has come in handy.

I know Bon didn't mean to hurt you, when a dog is fighting they are all about the fight, that is what they are focusing on at the time. I know how scary it can be. All of you will be in my thoughts. (((Hugs)))

Hopefully Anna will recover just fine. Bon is a Mastiff, one bite is all it takes to do that damage. She grabbed his collar in the middle of a dog fight. We all know that is a bad thing to do, probably the worst place to grab a dog, especially when they are fighting, but in the heat of the moment you don't think about right and wrong places to grab, you just go in to stop the fight. Yes she was bitten badly. That does NOT make Bon a bad dog. Of course the trust is broken, or at the very least damaged, but its not irreparable. Anna wil do what is best for them all and I somehow don't think that includes rehoming Bon. He doesn't just run around biting. And honestly nobody knows exactly what happened, even Anna wouldn't know everything, those things happen too fast. She made a mistake, Bon made a mistake, Anna got hurt.

I honestly just don't think it helps someone to say "maybe it's time to rehome the dog" when they are dealing with something like this. She loves her dogs and this is very trauamtic. I'm sure if she felt like she needed to do it she wouldn't need suggestions from anyone here. I jsut know if I was in her place it would upset me to see someone telling me maybe I should rehome my dog that I love because we both made a mistake. I am not belittling the bite, it's very bad, but he didn't pull her down and maul her. It was one incident. I'm sure she will do what is best.

I want to be perfectly clear that my concern is about Anna's welfare. Of course she loves her dog. I love my pets. Some dogs will bite like that, under many different circumstances. I, personally, would not want to have a dog around my home that could do that kind of damage to a human or to another pet. It's like owning a loaded gun. Some people can handle that. I could not. My opinion - doesn't make me right or wrong. She may find that Bon will never bite again. I hope that is true for her. I trust that is true for her. I support her in her decision.

Oh Anna, I am so sorry :( That looks very painful. I never posted about it but last August I got bitten by Mandy breaking up a fight between her and Luka. Mine was not nearly as bad and was very painful so I can't imagine what your leg feels like. My arm was in a sling for a while and I couldn't use it for much of anything. I have three scars on my arm from the puncture wounds. I know Mandy did not mean it, that bite was meant for Luka and it was my fault for coming in the middle of it but had I not Mandy would probably have been killed or seriously injured (Luka is extremely strong and does not back down in a fight). We keep them separate now but that is only because that was not the first fight and we could not always figure out what triggered their aggression towards each other.

I truly believe this isn't caused by the type of food. I think they just need to be fed separately. All of my dogs are fed separately just because they ARE dogs and you really never, ever know what could happen, and having been through a painful bite, I didn't want to experience it again nor do I want my dogs to experience it, and I certainly don't want to quarantine them again and have Animal Control visit my house ... that was no fun!

Again I am really sorry and I hope you are feeling better soon. Your leg looks awful. :( My arm was swollen and bruised like that but I did not need stitches and it was very painful, I seriously can't imagine what that feels like.

I have been bit too,Not as bad by far,But it took forever to heal,And not once did i look at Molly different.I was stupid i was nervous that day(and if she reacted it would be my own stupidity)But after Molly calmed down i cleaned her all up(Lacy uses Molly's floppy lips to her advatage)I cleaned her and jumped in my car with her and jamie took Lacy.

Bon simply reacted.Just like Molly did.

That is all dogs have,They cannot say "that scared or startled me" They nip!

Vela had told me about this incident and I just wanted to say I am so very sorry Anna. I can only imagine how traumatic this all has been, it will take time to heal emotionally as well as physically. Yes mastiffs have very powerful jaws and a quick bite from a big boy like that can certainly cause more damage than a more average sized dog. They have a naturally powerful bite and big jaws. I think in a fight like that, as others have said, the instincts kick in and all they know is that something is holding/hindering/grabbing them and they are suddenly feeling more vulnerable. I think you've been given good advice on feeding separately etc. I know your nerves must be shattered by this, not to mention the physical pain. I hope you have found some comfort and support in most of the posts here. I also feel your post is a good and important reminder to all of us to be careful in how we react when something like this happens, I only hope I will never be in that situation, but I know it could happen to any of us with multiple dogs.

It really does hit home that dogs are animals, no matter how much we mother them. I know quite a few mastiffs and they really are quite soppy dogs, Im sure he didn't mean it, I've been bitten in a similar way but no where near as bad as poor Anna! We have to feed our dogs seperatly from a very similar experience. Its not nice doing it but its the best and the safest thing for everyone.

Anyway, as others have stated, I'd be sure to feed the dogs in seperate places from here on where they can NOT get to each other whilst they are eating.
My dogs wouldn't disturb each other whilst eating and showed a mutual respect in that department although it was common for them to check out each others dishes once they'd finished but your dog obviously doesn't have that respect and just goes straight in and tries to take the other dogs food even when he has his own so I'd def never let him have access to the others whilst they are eating again. As far as the dogs were concerned, this was just a mealtime squabble like what you see in wolf packs on the TV and now they get along fine again but it was obviously a bit more serious than that for you.

Anna, I just want you to know how sorry I am that this happened to you.

I am sure you must be in a lot of pain and you were badly frightened.

Obviously you and Mark are great dog owners - and have experienced many dog related issues over the years. This is one more and you will know how to handle this one too.

Years ago my ex-husband went to pick up my first kitty, Sugar, in the middle of a cat fight. He was bitten so fast he didn't know what had hit him. His hand looked like he had a boxing glove on for weeks.

I agree with finding a way to feed them separately. Heck, I have to separate my 8 CATS at feeding time! It's a bit of a nuisance, but I have a routine and can do it in my sleep (and probably have done!) Now and then I have to stop and think, "Now, who IS behind Door #1?" He he he.

Awww Anna that looks so awful. A couple of years ago I broke up an almost fight between my German Shepherd and a Rotti foster I had. Simon was not at all happy about Baby Girl being in his backyard and when he jumped up to let her know I grabbed his collar not thinking. He then turned around and got a nice chunk out of my thumb(my fingernail ended up falling off). I don't think he realized I had grabbed him and the only thing on his mind at the moment was letting that dog know she was in his space. He was very sorry afterward and no we did not rehome him because of it. We just made sure no more fosters were around him or in the backyard at the same time as him.

It was nowhere near as badly as you but I remember the shock that my boy could do that to me, understandable or no. Even though it was a long time ago a part of my trust in him was lost that day never to be regained.

Oh Anna. I'm so very sorry. I know it made you miss Angus more when thinking how he never bit you. It's impossible to know just what to do in these situations. I probably would have done the same because it's hard to just watch that and you were worried about Huney. I hope your leg heals without getting worse. Try not to be so nervous. I know that's hard but dogs can sense that. I understand it did take away some security of your relationship with Bon. Maybe continue to feed him in his crate for a while? Also, maybe contact Nancy, the pet psychic? I hope my rambling has helped you a little.

You know Bon didn't do it on purpose, you know that fighting doggies pay absolutely no attention to the human in the middle, and you know Bon loves you.

Having said that, I hope your leg gets better soon. Perhaps feeding them seperately for awhile will help, and I know that even tho I only have two, if one doesn't eat, when they feel like eating I lock the other one in with me, and put the food back out.
I know you know all this, and I think that you should not stop feeding them raw.

Now, I am taking this thread to a lighter place - for Chris and Anna - Bon and Bob bit you??????? If you want to rehome them, send them to me :D :D :D

At the shelter I volunteer at they always have air horns handy in case when there are dog to dog intros they go badly. I bought one because there are times when casey attacks bubba, no bloodshed but it is scary and I am afraid I will get bit breaking it up.

You can buy one at a sporting goods store and keep it handy, lets face it you cannot separate them 24/7. I hope this was a one time incident, I definetely agree with the feeding separate idea.

Edit to add, I am so sorry about your leg, sorry but it looks just gross :eek:

wow that's one impressive bruise. and the paw print shorts are really cute. phreds' idea about NILF is good, as are some of the others' idea about seperate feeding areas. i don't think that raw food and raw feeding is more dangerous then kibble, to a dog, food is food and it could have happened over any type of food. i am so sorry that this has happened.

oh my anna. that looks terrible. :( you did what most people would have done in that situation. i hope you get to feeling better and less nervous soon.

And know that we still love Bon, he's a sweet boy, any dog could bite somebody in the middle of a dog fight. Nebo is food aggressive with dogs, I know he would never bite a human over food, but it could easily happen if I was trying to break something up.

I simply don't know what to say or what to think, but I trust you and Mark to control your situation as best you can. I have had a similar situation in my home with Mack, but we think we have it under control now. But, like you, we have to feed Honey and Mack, seperately. He had too much aggression towards her. Thank goodness, he has not shown it towards us.

This is the 1st I've mentioned this, but Mz Klo gave me a nice impresion on my bad wrist last month. i won't go into details, except to say, it was totally MY fault. as I grabbed her collar (anger on my part) after she disobeyed me when I was doing something I she didn't like. Lesson learned.

Of course it was an accident. Bon reacted on instinct. You're right, dog are dogs. They don't have hands to tell us to "get away" or slap us silly. You reacted instinctively also. It's one of those things.

I feel your pain (do I ever)..(Percocet works better than Vicodin fyi). Drink lots of H20 with Augmentin (I've had it 2x in 2 months and had a *ahem* female* reaction) Thankfully you don't need rabies shots (I'm one up on you :p )).

I love you to pieces (you know that) and hope and pray you feel better fast. A million HUGS too

Wow!! I'm so sorry for you, Huney and Bon both. How scary!!

My mom has had issues with her dogs fighting over food, even though they all eat kibble. Pippi's attacked Dazzi, Dazzi and Taggert, and I think even Jack has got caght up in one or two skirmishes...all around/over food. They now all eat in their kennels.

With some packs of dogs it is just neccesary to feed them separately. I think with Bon's size and potential for future food agression, I would not let him eat with the girls anymore. It may never ever happen again, but because Bon is so powerful, it may just be the safest thing for everyone.

Oh dear, Anna. That wound looks just horribly painful :( I'm so sorry you had to go threw such a heart-breaking and painful injury. It was an accident on Bon's part, as every said, he's a dog, and dogs just aren't human even though they share so many human-like emotions. I truly believe it was just an accident and that Bon isn't a dangerous animal. I also think the dogs should be seperated from now on when they are eating, but I am sure you're going to do that anyway.

I'm so sorry Anna- I can't imagine how badly your leg hurts- probably as much as your heart.
We know that Bon is a big baby. Just a big baby with a lot of teeth and a big mouth. I don't think its entirely fair to compare him with Angus b/c that's like comparing 2 kids, but its not my leg either. :(
I agree with the other's I don't think RAW or KIBBLE had anything to do with it. If dogs are going to have issues it doesn't matter what they are eating.
I agree also that Huney was probably trying to protect her momma.
I also think another round of obediance might not hurt. (once your leg heals up of course) And heck - I think all of our dogs would benefit!!
I also think an email to Nancy the Pet Psychic wouldn't hurt in the meantime either. I know it sounds out there but to get inside that big bonehead it'd be worth it.

My very first thought was that it would be good to keep Bon separated from now on until all other dogs are done eating.

I also think that hand feeding him for a while would be a good idea. (Though i don't know how that would work with the raw ;-/p )

I do think that there is more of a likeliness of food aggression with the raw because it is much better tasting and therefore more valued. A slight increase. Not much. Also could it be that Bon might not be getting enough and is a bit hungry and felt that he had to lash out? (Not at you but going after another's meal.) (I'm not trying to imply anything, I'm just trying to explore all possibilities.)

At this time I realize blood is pouring down my leg and I'm trying to figure out what to do. I looked down and not only do I have punctures but there was fatty tissue hanging out of one of them :o
I get the phone, get into the tub and call Mark and he came home and took me to the hospital.

Do you know how embarrassing it is to tell people that your dog bit you? It made me just want to cry. I know this is bad but I just kept thinking "Angus never bit me."

The doctor was shocked when she seen my leg and said it was impressive. I'm definitely not impressed with it :rolleyes:

I did have to get a tetanus shot, intravenous antibiotics and a total of 6 stitches. She said she really didn't like to put stitches in bites but the punctures were just too big not put a few in. I wasn't at the hospital long, around 3 hours or so and now I'm off work till Tuesday.
She sent me home with a prescription for Augmentin and Vicodin for pain (not that it really helps much.) I go to have the stitches out in 10 days. Until then I'm to rest and keep my leg elevated.

The dogs are getting along just fine now, as if nothing ever happened. I fed the girls outside as usual and fed Bon in his crate.

Now I feel like I'm nervous about everything and feel like just going back to dry dog food, but who knows...will they fight over that too :confused:

I told my mom and now she's worried about me because Bon is so big. She's afraid something will happen to me. I tried to calm her by telling her that his aggression wasn't directed towards me but it didn't seem to make her feel any better.
I don't want to tell any fiends or family for the fear that they will not want to come over any more and think I have a "viscous" dog although I did tell the girl who dog sat for me and she stopped by last night to see me and the dogs, it didn't seem to phase her at all. She said she isn't afraid to watch them any more now than before...that made me feel good :)

My leg looks absolutely terrible. I'm going to attach some pictures, so if your grossed out by things like this don't look :p

I wanted to tell this story to let everyone know that dogs are still dogs. Just try to not make the same mistake I did. Think before you step between two dogs, even if they are your own.

Everything she wrote was in concern for Anna, and definitely not written in a judgmental way. She was just giving her opinion in a loving way. I think her last post made that clear.

I have done the same thing.

We now have Anna,Lacy is very jealous of her,Lacy got mad and took a bone away from her.Which started a huge fight,Of course i jumped in,Anna had major surgery and i was worried she would pull something in her stomach.

I grabbed Lacy out from under her(Lacy fights on her back for some reason she always ends up underneath the other dog.

She growled at me and went to nip,I got my hand out of there in time.

I didn't veiw it as attacking at all. No one was rude to her in their post following her opinion, so I don't see how it's "attacking". They were just telling Sasvermont that it's not an option. I also agree that Sasvermont's post was not rude at all, or judgemental. She was very kind in the way she approached it and that's all that matters.

Anna, I hope you are feeling better today. That was a very scary occurance and your leg certainly looks awful and I am sure feels extremely awful and unfortunately will for some time to come.

As Amy has said, my dogs will get into fights over food and the boys (Jack and Taggert) over rawhide. And I always gone in to part them and I have gotten bit a time or two. Not nearly as bad as Anna. The dog who has given me the most wounds was Oreo - the smallest dog we have had except Pippi. When she got into a fight, she would not let go of the other dog and if you came between her and the other dog, you would get bit not because she was upset with you for trying to stop the fight but because she was still trying to get the dog and your hand (or whatever) got in the way. It was not an attack it was like you hitting your thumb when you are hammering. You did not mean to hit your thumb but you came between the two objects. And of course it is worse when all 3 objects are moving. Oreo did not like to be made to do anything so if you tried to force her, she would bite you - a totally different thing than when she was in the middle of a dog fight. (Not that the pain is any different but the intent was different - in the dog fight she was trying to bite the other dog and I got my hand in the way and got the bite instead.)

We have been feeding the dogs in their kennels for awhile now because Snoopy is eating a different food from the rest. And they want his which is funny because he would rather have theirs. Four of the dog kennels are in the family room - Pippi's is in the dining room. Snoopy being the demanding dog he is now won't eat if I don't stay in the family room with him. So I have been bringing Pippi's bowl into the family room. I didn't lock kennels just put them in them. Dazzi nor Pippi had never acted food aggressive before. But Dazzi ate hers, came over to me on the couch where Pippi was laying on me rather than eating and sniffed at Pippi's food - and faster than I could wink they were all over each other. Dazzi can be very aggressive when she gets angry - she weighs about 40 lbs to Pippi's 18. The way they were going after each other I was sure there would be major damage. And Pippi is strong for a dog her size. I could not get them apart. I could have easily been bit by either one trying to pull them apart but Carl came out and helped pull them apart. The reason I am sharing this story is now I do lock the kennels most times. But since that time neither dog have reacted to the other coming near their food dish since then. We can't know why one time a dog will fight over something and the next time not. But for everyone's safety, it is much smarter to lock the kennels rather than "tempt" the dogs.
