That's a big concern of mine also! Cats hide their kittens very well, and they could be a good distance away from where mama was found. Starvation is a brutal way to die, and I'd be inclined to spay & vaccinate her, put a break-away collar around her neck with your phone #, and then let her go. :( I have followed nursing cats for upwards of a half mile from the food source in order to find their nest. Mom cats are very good at doing a decoy act if they think they're being followed, and will lead people on wild goose chases, but by following and watching from a distance in my car, I've tracked down most of the litters in time.
