Bon bit me (not feeling so blue any more!)

Anna I am so sorry. :( I know how much that must hurt and your heart hurts too because your Bon was responsible (indirectly). All I can think of is that the positive thing that came out of this was to learn that they need to be separated in the future at feeding time. This same thing could have occurred while your petsitter was watching them and you would have felt twice as bad had she been hurt. See, there is a silver lining to every cloud I guess.

Years ago I had a different standard poodle (Whitney) and miniature poodle (Ashley). They would eat at different speeds and when Whitney finished early once she went close to Ashley's bowl and got a nice growl. I separated them for feedings after that. When it comes to food, sometimes their common sense goes out the window. ((((Hugs)))) to you and I hope your leg heals quickly.

OMG!! Anna!!....I´m so sorry...... I know how it feels..... but us as moms know what we should do but we still get in the middle :rolleyes: ...... thankfully it was nothing worse to any of you guys......

Bon must be so confused..... and poor Huney too.......

It that happened to me my dogs would have been PTS by my husband....I hate when people can´t understand that as a plain ól dog reaction, and not as an aggression per se...... even less that WE had the fault there......

Oh my Anna, I am sorry you got hurt. But, and I say but, b/c it didn't happen to me, but at least it wasn't your face or anything worse. At least you know now that even though he is your furkid, he is a dog and he is capable of something like this, to enable you to be more cautious in the future, and to make different feeding arrangements if need be. Had this incident never happened and it might have been worse on a different occasion...sometimes we need something like this to happen to forewarn us, i guess :( I am certainly not trying to make light of it...it is definately a sad thing all around that it happened.

And it's hard to know how to react to Bon too, he is your dog and you love him, and know that he has instincts, but at the same time, just like with skin kids, when they do something out of the ordinary, all sorts of emotions arise...sadness, anger, disbelief...Bon is still young and he has learning to do. I remember my Swissie breeder telling me that giant breed dogs could benefit from going thru obedience school more than once, maybe that would be beneficial for him, and maybe make your mom feel better.... I understand that he isn't aggressive normally, just around food, but being a giant breed, maybe it couldn't hurt. I am certainly not trying to tell you what to do, I just feel for you. Dale was mouthy sometimes...never broke the skin, but it would frustrate me at times. We know you love your Bon boy and glad that you were able to come to us to tell us about it (it gives us all a reality check too, that as you said dogs are dogs and have instincts), we all understand, some have been there too. Anyway, hopefully you are feeling better soon!! (hugs)

That bite is impressive, for sure. Gosh, I know that bite was painful. I have heard of dogs doing just what yours did, many, many times.... but never got to see the results. It is shocking.

Bon might be happier in a home by himself.

That is some bite. Much more serious than I would want to happen to me again or to have happen to a neighbor's child or one of my other pets. I know you don't want to consider this, but surely re-homing him has come to your thoughts? Yes?

I hope your wound heals quickly and smoothly.

I know you will do the right thing with your Bon Bon boy.....and whatever works for you, works for us, I am sure.

OMG! I've never seen a dog bite before but that must really be more than the average, of course Bon is more than the average size dog. WOW! I'm so sorry. I sure hope you feel better soon.

Anna, that looks awful. :eek: I am so sorry you had to go through all of that. I must admit that no matter how many times I read on here about the right way to break up a fight, if my dog was in a fight I know that my instinct would be to jump into the middle to pull them apart. I hope you feel better (about everything) soon.

Oh Anna, that looks like a serious bite! :( I'm so sorry you had to experience that. I know you love Bon and he probably didn't even know it was you he bit, he just wanted that grub!

I think it's a good idea to separate them for dinner, and also let him know that you're the boss!

I'm sure Bon didn't mean it - he is such a sweet boy. Some dogs are just food aggressive. I think Mufasa has a bit of it in him - that's the only mean bone in his body.

If Bon had REALLY meant it there's no doubt that he could have done some serious injury to you or Huney. He didn't really mean it though - it was a mistake.

I'm not sure if you've ever had dogs, however, as a person with 4 of them I know food aggression is a VERY common thing. This does not mean they aren't capable of living in a home with other dogs. It just means they must be seperated at meal times.

There will always be squabbles in a home with multiple animals, of any species, it's a risk that we all take. Just like a home with multiple children, there's garunteed to be a fight or argument.

There is a big difference between food aggression, dog aggression, human aggression, and just plain aggression. Having met Bon, I can't see Bon purposely harming a human over food or anything for that matter.


Anna, {{{{HUGS}}}} to both you and Bon - is Huney okay? Send her some hugs from me too. And for Roxey, who I'm sure was trying to be referee through all of this. ;)

Anna, I'm so sorry that this has happened.:( It sure looks painful.:( I hope that you start feeling better soon and that the meds make you heal quickly. A few of my cats are also very food aggressive but they've never tried to bite me. I think that separating them during feeding time is good solution. Please take care. (((HUGS)))

I'm so sorry Anna. Stuart and I have both been bitten in the same situation--breaking up a fight. In the middle of a fight, a dog's brain has turned off. They are running on pure instinct and adreline. Bon probably had no clue that he was biting a human, especially his human. Breaking up a fight safely is very difficult. I have way more experience at it than I'd like and sometimes still do it all wrong! Sometimes the only way to stop a pack fight before someone gets killed is to wade into the middle and start flinging dogs off each other!

I agree. I can't belive rehoming him was even suggested!!!:eek:
