Is this cage too small for a large male golden hamster?

I personally think it is but I'm not very knowledgable about hamster cages :p

If it IS too small how big should his cage be and what kind should it be?

It looks fine to me, especially since you have a second level so he isn't all crowded in the bottom :)

I would probably angle the ramp down just a little more though so he can climb on it easier ;)
