I have just got a new laptop with the Windows 7 OS and I don't think much of Windows Live Mail. Anyone have an alternative which they would recommend?

G-mail, Yahoo are both good. I have a Yahoo account; they are pretty diligent about protecting users. (You can't keep logged in all the time, for example).

I checked and Outlook Express is NOT compatible with Windows 7. I think that is just plain wrong of MacroSloppy.
I use Outlook full version but that costs.

Use webmail! That means any of the above like Gmail, Yahoo, etc. Windows Vista and 7 replaced Outlook Express with Windows Live Mail.
The advantage of webmail is that if your computer has trouble and the files have to be backed up and then put back in, you won't lose your address book or messages. The address book and messages can be backed up - if your computer is working. If the hard drive dies, then you are hooped with OE or Windows Live - not to mention Thunderbird or Incredimail.
You can also use your internet provider's webmail. Suppose your provider is Comcast. You can log into its webmail from the Comcast home page. You may have to call your provider if you forgot your password etc - have your bill handy!

I already have web mail, Yahoo & TalkTalk (my providers) but wanted a seperate 'to the desktop' type too.
Mozilla Thunderbird is a easy to use and friendly email client.

The big caveat is that it is very difficult to migrate away from Thunderbird if you ever want to. So be sure to check that box "leave a copy on the server" if you use it.
I used Opera's browser years ago, it also has e-mail. Check it out!

Thanks for that nugget of information. I use the Firefox brower and as Thunderbird seems to be a good companion for it I might just go with that. The reviews I read were pretty positive too.Quote:
