Wow... That's pretty harsh. :(
Did she really threaten to kill Frisco (I am most certainly not doubting you, just confirming)? Threatening to kill an animal is just...well...scary. :(
Sorry. I know how bad you must feel about this. Let's hope he gets another great home.

At lease she brought the rat back... I use to own 7-8 rats (& tones of babies) 2 yrs ago... most were for breeding, but 2 of them were my pets & I played with them every day... I went to college & came back every weekend to clean the cage (it was a huge cage) 1 month I couldn't make it back, but my mom said she liked the rats so she would care for them for me... the first weekend she killed them all!! & lied to me for the whole month.. she would say, their doing great... their having lots of little babies & I'm playing with rattus every couple of nights... I "hate" my mom... first she dumps my kitten on the hwy & then kills all my rats... oh & to top things off.. a few months after she dumps my kitten, she gets my sis a kitten & they still have it 3 yrs later

my mom is full of cold black blood...

u can see how I got my name... King (my last name) Rattus (my prized rat named Rattus) = KingRattus
u can read the whole murder story on my website http://jess.iahu.ca photos/pets/rip...

I hate walking into petsores that have rats, mostly pure white rats... I feel like balling my eyes out because of the horrible memory... my soon to be knows how much it hurts me so he promissed that once we move to hallifax & buy a house the first new pet I can get is a white rat... then once I get use to the new area I can get more & get back into breeding again...

I feel ur pain & then some... I hope u never go through what I went through...

kingrattus I am sorry your mom did that but your post irritates me. You were breeding rats? For what, feeders? If not feeders, what pets? Rats are NOT breeding stock to be bred whenever someone wants babies etc. they are animals and should be treated with respect. They are not "stock" and every one of my breeders is a pet way before a breeder, some breeders I don't even breed!

It is very unhealthy for rats to just have babies over and over again, and that's what it sounds like your rats were doing.

Perhaps you should report your mother to the Humane Society. How did your rats die? Did she literally kill them by hurting them or by not feeding them? If you knew she did that to your kitten why would you leave animals in her care?

When I was younger I rescued 5 kittens in Easter, who I found squished between a fence and some small concrete area, I carried all of them home by myself. They were the cutest little kittens. Well one day, my moms bf killed them, brutally flinging them up against our patio wall, blood was everywhere. He kicked them so bad their eyeballs were out! Luckily, one of our kittens Blacky was hiding behind the stove and because of that he lived, and we still have him today. That was when I was in 5th grade, he is an old kitty but still kicking. This man also stabbed our cockatiel in the stomach killing him. Then when my mom FINALLY left him, when I was in the 8th grade, he broke into our house and let all of our cockatiels free. Years of work went into our tiels, we had them all since they were hatched! We were fortunate to find two of the babies outside on our lawn, but the other flew away or were probably caught by a cat or something terrible. These were my moms birds and she loved them so much. She cried for days after that. Those were our birds.
:(

Well want to hear another horror story? When I was pregnant with Dylan I had some pet ratties, on same sex cages and they were my loves. I also had three bunnies, a fawn rex, a Holland Lop and a mini lop. I also had two mice. These animals were my PRIDE AND JOY! I was so ill during my pregnancy I was hospitalized for two weeks for hyperemesis and lived off an IV. During that time I could not go near the animals because I was sick and would throw up everytime I was near them. Dan said he would take care of them. They were moved to the garage (a nice one with ac and heater mind you) so I could breathe easier at home. Everyday I would ask Dan if he fed the animals and layed with them etc. Everyday he said yes. One day after feeling I could finally manage to go touch them, I walked into the garage and most of them were dead! :( Dan never fed them, nor did he clean the cage, NOTHING! He did not comprehend taking care of animals, and God with a baby on the way it made me think if he could handle a baby! But he is very good with Dylan, he's just not into small animals like I am and I eventually forgave him, but still always bring it up because I cannot forget about it.

I lost all bunnies, 6 of my rats, both mice and my hedgehog who was given to me on my 18th bd. Speedy the first. I don't know how some people can be this way, but he just didn't understand the respionsibility and knew nothing about animals. On that same day I had my ultrasound appointment in which I had to drink tons of water and was so fricking pissed because I couldn't pee, I got stung by a bee, the first sting of the season mind you, then found out a friend of mine passed away. The same week I caught Dan with porn and he left me, WHILE I was pregnant! It was really the worst week of my life!:( :( :(

But in Dans defense he now understand completely the knowledge, care, love and responsibility to take care of animals and he is crazy about the cats. We have since worked out of problems and I would trust him with anything now........he knows anyway if he ever did something like that again I wouldn't tolerate it. He has taken animal husbandry classes etc. It's really amazing that a lot of people just don't understand how to care for an animals and really sincerely think you can only feed and water it every five days and it will stay healthy. It's very sad. :(

Yes they are safe with him lol. I leave all the time and he cares for them well, now that he knows how. I can't hold that against someone who doesn't know, now that he knows would be another story.

Some people just need to be educated is all. He still cries when he thinks about what he did, and feels so much regret because he didn't know how to take care of them. Because he's a man, and thinks he can do everything he was scared to come to me to ask how to take care of them etc. not to mention I really think my pregnancy took a toll on him....it was always up in the air whether Dylan would live or not, I don't know how he focused on both at once........it obviously affected him because he wouldn't do anything like that on purpose.

A lot ofpeople just need to be educated, they have no clue how to take care of animals and it's my fault for not explaining how to care for them, and just handing over the responsibility of them to him, without properly explaning what to do for the animals.

It was so terrible when he came to me and was balling his eyes out for them dying. The sad thing is that he really liked the animals too, but was too stubborn to ask for help with them.

Now after being educated about certain animals he is AWESOME wth them and I couldn't ask for a better Daddy for Dylan or a pet owner. He spoils the ratties and kitties....he's known how to take care of cats as he has always had cats butnever had small animals. His dad always shunned them away. *sigh*

Anyways, last time I left I came back and all the cages were spotless, he gave the rats a bath even lol, all had food and water etc. Now he knows their exact living needs that need to be met and I am really proud of him. Every pet owner makes mistakes one in their life, and that was a real big one for him, but luckily it helped him learn.

He did feed them, I am probably overdoing it a bit, but he didn't feed them enough. He really thought every other day was good for them.

At least now I can rest easy and know my animals are safe. I just wish his family would have educated him before and this would have never happened.

And just to clarify, Dan didn't intentionally kill anything, it was an accident.......it was my stepdad who killed the animals on PURPOSE, the bird and kittens. He was a freak and would beat my mom all the time, including while she was pregnant.

------
Yes I was breeding them for feeders, not pets... & where did I say I didn't treat them with respect?? hmmm?? they had good food, plenty of water (4 bunny water bottles) A 2 story cage 4'X2'X3' (LxWxH)... they had shredded paper, grass & leaves as bedding, a huge wheel to run on, a bouncy ladder I made, boxes to hide in & eat, a farret run around ball, they never had to step in their waste, they had other good rats to play with & people...
I also don't recall calling then "stock" EVER!!!! The ones I called pets were the only friendly rats, because I got them when they were babies... the rest were either rescued from poor homes or bought as adults & were untamable... but I breed them all even my pets... & they wern't having litter after litter after litter.. why do u think I had so many of them? I gave them turns & the avg litter I got was 15-20 & that was plenty/month. I even used the rats as education.. I would take a pregnate one & lend it to the eleamentary schools & to kids who wanted to watch & learn how to care for a rat (I gave out my simi tame ones in hope they would turn more tame which they did, but only to the darn kid they were with & I kept tabs (calling every couple of days & seeing them once a week) on them & a couple of weeks after the babies were born I took them back)
-------
"Perhaps you should report your mother to the Humane Society."
---------
Why didn't u report ur husband to the Humane Society!!!???

--------
" How did your rats die? Did she literally kill them by hurting them or by not feeding them?"
-------
Why did u only give me 2 options?? harm & starvation?? 3 were sent to the vets to be destroyed & the rest were dumped.
-------
"If you knew she did that to your kitten why would you leave animals in her care? "
------
Because I had no choice!! I was told I could bring my rats with me when I went to college & the week before I was ready to move the landlord changed her mind!! I tried for the whole week to find a friend who would take them, but all said NO! & then I tried pets in 2 cities & 2 towns & they all said NO!! I had 2 last options KILL THEM or trust my mom with them during the week & I'll care for them on weekends. For the 3 months they were partly in her care I still called around to see if I could find homes for them...

I'm so sorry to all of you for these horrible experiences.

When I was growing up my father had a capuchin. He bought her after my mom died and she was a wonderful comfort to us all. Then when she was 7 and I was 10 he married "her." He thought of us as his daughters but "she" hated Lillian (our capuchin). One week my dad went on a buisness trip she refused to let me feed her or take her out or even clean her cage! She nearly died and when my dad got back he divorced "her."

Lillian is still alive today and is my dad's total companion. I must admit I'm jealous of her!

This thread has been really hard to read. I'm glad to say I don't have any horror stories to add....I can't even imagine what goes through some people's heads. I could NEVER EVER forgive anyone who intentionally caused harm to my animals, either our of animosity or neglect. There is no excuse.

The only thing I have to add to the discussion really is this: Don't judge people who breed rats for food harshly until you know the whole story. I have known several people who only discovered the wonders of rat keeping through breeding for snake food, and they all take excellent care of their rats.

One in particular comes to mind....He has two males and four females. Each female has two or three litters per year. That is more litters than is ideal, but it works out very well for him and his ratties, and since he bought them he has come to love them dearly.

It certainly sounds to me that Kingrattus' ratties were very well taken care of, and they were obviously well loved.

ANNNNND....on the original topic....I dread what my parents would do if they ever foud out about my ratties.....Neither of them would hurt the ratties, but I don't want to give them up....

luckies4me
03-11-2003, 07:53 PM
Yes you are right WolfChan. But I was going from the way it sounded. I am sorry but that is my opinion on feeders. I dislike it very much! Not to mention it is unhealthy for snakes....I don't even want to go into detail.

KingRattus:

I am sorry about your ratties. :( If you took care of them that is great! I hate feeder breeders who just neglect them so bad, it makes me sick. And as you know I breed fancy rats as pets so a lot of us breeders hate feeder breeders......that is just the way we are. I am glad you gave them good care.

As far as Dan, he didn't do anything on purpose, he was unknowledgable and with my bad pregnancy and everything I know why it happened but I have to forgive, especially because of the fact he is the father of my son. I can't hate him, that's not good for my son to see. Not to mention we still live together and are together. He would never intentionally hurt any animal. He's come a LONG way though let me tell you! :) He's pretty obscessed with his animals lol. Sometimes to the point it makes me sick..urrgh!

It sounds like your mother did though and I don't know why she would do that to you. It is sickening. Those were YOUR rats, and you obviously loved them so why would she do such a thing?? I don't understand parents these days. At least some were euthaized though and not killed viscously like my cats were. Perhaps if they were unsocial that was the best thing for them, to not breed more unsocial rats. Where did she dump them? Why did she dump your kitten on the highway? Do you know what happened to it? Did she throw it out a window or what? God that is cruel! If my mother did that I would never forgive her.

Again I am sorry about your ratties. I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions, but I do have to say that even if they were bred for feeders why would you breed them if they were unsocial? A lot of people take feeder rats home and breed them and sell their babies as pets, which really hurts the rat fancy because then there are tons of "pet" rats with horrible temperament problems etc. At LEAST you gave them love and care, a hell of a lot more than ANY feeder breeder I have seen! So Congrats to you on that! :D I am sure your babies were social though, so that's a good thing.

If Dan hurt any of my animals or starved them on prupose, I don't care if he was the preseident, yes I WOULD report him! But the fact was, he didn't do it on purpose, he did it on accident. It was a mstake and a very good life lesson, one that taught him responsibility for animals and humans at that!

I wish I would have known about Humane Societys and all that when I was younger. I would have reported my moms bf for killing our kittens and birds and everything but the fact is in California police and Animal Control could care less.

It took my moms SO many times just for the police to arrest Francisco for beating her, every time they would just leave us there with hi. We had to go into hiding at a womens shelter and after he put my mom in the hospital for beating her while she was pregnant and breaking her arm he was then finally put in jail, and it was for TWO days!

"Where did she dump them? Why did she dump your kitten on the highway? Do you know what happened to it? Did she throw it out a window or what?"
--------
She dumped the kitten near a trailor park... it took me 2yrs to findout where she dumped it & I learned of a friends friend who lived in that trailor park, & I asked her if anyone found a male black simese kitten unfixed with its litter box & a bag of food & dishes & she said YES!!! I said did he find a good home & she told me hes really fat now & hes a good cat... so I know for a fact that he's ok... which has releaved me & aloud me to get him off my mind of where he is & if hes ok...
-------
"why would you breed them if they were unsocial? A lot of people take feeder rats home and breed them and sell their babies as pets, which really hurts the rat fancy because then there are tons of "pet" rats with horrible temperament problems etc."
-------
I didn't sell the babies as pets, but the ones I did keep were raised only with Rattus, she was an awesome mom.

After birth I had a cage built into the main cage where the mother & babies could live (its hard feeding babies when the others r stealing the babies for their own) but I learned that the mother would go crazy if I put her in the seperet cage away from the rest. so the cage inside the main cage worked out great. but I had another cage where I would let the babies growup only with Rattus. But remember I breed them as my own personal feeders so the bad genes never got out into the population of good rats. & I never kept any babies from any of the rats except Rattus cause she was the only rat with good genes the rest were imbreed or I had no idea where they came from or how old they really were.

& I was never bitten by any of the rats I owned, & I owned alot of them. Not including when I play fight with Rat (Rattus' & Mike's baby girl), Rat was special to me because she looked just like her daddy. (Mike was my first rat & I had to put him to sleep 11 months after I got him, he fell horribly ill & the vets refused to help him. but the day I brought him to the vet to be put down 1/2 the staff ran out screaming & the vet wouldn't shut up for 1/2 an hour on how he could have been treated & it would be best if I let him die on his own & blah blah blah... I was crying my eyes out & told her to please put him out... I think she just enjoyed watching me ball my eyes out... My dog Max use to go to that vet but they pulled a BS stunt with him & that set my dad off because Max is his best buddy, so we had Max switched to his old old old vet which dad feels their r very good with him. Max was removed from that vet cause Max tried to Attack too many of their MALE vets & we felt it was causing too much stress on him & the 2ed vets were mostly female, but hes back at the guy's vet & now that hes older he knows the MALES arn't out to get him... Hes always had a gruge towards MALES for some reason, but its been quite useful... I learned that if dad was trying to boss me around or would give me my stuff back or if he was tring to get in to the house when I was trying to lock him out (playing of course)... all I had to yell was HELP MAX & scream, hehe & Max would come to the rescue, mostly by deep barking or bitting the thing I was trying to get away from dad... but I learned one lesson never ever yell max help when locking dad out oof the house... cause dad had a key once & hes a lot stronger then me so he was able to open the door enough to put his arm in & pretend to strangle me, well stupidly I yelled MAX HELP HELP AHHHHHHHH... Max came in full force & grabed dad's arm & pulled him through the door while I still had my weight on the door, & shook dad like a rag & forced dad on the floor, but besides that being cool & totaly scary at the same time, Max didn't leave one bite mark, only slobber & bruses. He didn't even break the skin, but damn were the bruses ever black, dad couldn't use his arm for 2 days cause of the inner tissue damage... But dad said it was a great test for Max... he now knows that no matter who is hurting me Max will be there (this was around the time I was being sexualy harrassed at school & had death threats from the same guy (who Max liked)... Max even took on a giant german S. who ran up to me & jumped on me, Max won of course, but Max didn't know that I was friends with that dog & the dog only wanted to give me a kiss (the german was loose, she broke her chain again)... But once Max saved a friend & I from an angry raccoon who wanted our food & no matter how much we tosses thing near it, it still came to close & max ripped through the camper & chased it up a tree after he jumped on it... the coon was ok at the end... it learned not to come near people after that, but we left some stuff at the bottom of the tree anyway, cause at the same time we felt bad for it cause max jumped on it...

gotta stop chatting... just got word friend is going into ladour AHHHHHH... it'll be a nother screaming baby,,, AHHHHHH

Congrats to you for feeding prekilled! My brothers corn snake was ripped literally in HALF by his rats! :(

I adore snakes, and if I ever have one again it would probably be a mice eater, and would eat prekilled as well, but I LOVE all snakes! That's how I got into fancy rats anyway lol. In highschool, my teacher had a few California King Snakes and I loved them! I would carry them around during lunch and try to get people to know they are awesome pets. Now I had rats growing up as well, but it wasn't til this time that the feeders we bred really got to me. I took a lot home, sheesh I can actually remember really vividly my first beige rat lol! Such a cutie! That was before I ever saw dumbos too, and at 4 weeks who could resist! And well GGMR symdrome kicked in violently and I haven't been the same ever since lmao. :p

Yes...there are pre-killed mice/rats/rabbits. They are killed (and frozen) to reduce injury on the snake, or if the snake has a hard time catching mice/rats/rabbits. They are available at every pet store I have been to.

Anyhow, I love snakes...and I do feel kinda bad for the rodents, but hey...snakes have to eat. Pre-killed is my way to go also. I don't carry grudges against those who use live food (it's live in the wild).

Yeah but so far our tarantula hasn't been injured from the mice. I'm glad "some" people understand that animals have to eat even if it a live animal.

I didn't mean anyone here when I said 'some' I meant people I know who have eaten me or my parents out countless times for feeding our tarantula live food.

Thanfully Phia and and Trinaty eat more...urm digestable? food.

we have the cutest little baby rats that i always play wiht in lab now even though i know that pretty soon they will be taken to a pet shop which i dont know whether they will be feeder rats or pets. Speaking of people badly mistreating animals we have people in lab that throw away mice and hamsters all the time cause they aren't paying attention, sometimes we find them when we take out the trash though, i just think it's stupid.
