-11 degrees F here this morning till noon. Barrow, Alaska had 18 degrees F yesterday. Another cold spell but the sun is out that counts big time. :)

YOW! :eek::eek::eek:

How many seconds does it take for any exposed skin to get frostbitten?

I think 10 minutes or less. A friend and I bundled up and were going to do our 'walking group' outdoors. However, the zipper on my long coat separated up to my chest - not good. Plus, any exposed skin on my face was hurting after about 3 - 5 seconds exposure.

We went for coffee instead! :D

At the start of the Olympics, there was a feature on Siberia on TV. They said the temps got down to 50 below. I thought of you, Candace, and your walking group.

Coffee sounds like a much better idea!

It amazes me that the temp actually drops as low as -40c and less, and people go out and about and do stuff lol. Cold for us is -2c :p.

The crazy hot summer is really upsetting me :(. The sooner autumn and winter are here the better, then happy me returns.

I feel so bad for all the states that are being hit so hard with these terrible storms. Over here in California we are having the exact opposite problem. We are in a drought! We are doing rain dances and just wishing and hoping it will rain some more. And cold?? What's that? Besides the beginning of December when it dipped down in the 20s we have not really had a winter here at all.
When the west coast heard Phil saw his shadow we were happy, but we could just hear the rest of the country groaning.

It just amazes me how different the weather can be from one state to another.

I do hope all of my Pet Talk families stay safe and warm for the next round of storms coming. We are supposed to get another "storm" here this weekend. We'll see if it rains for more than a few hours.

It's 41F today! And sunny! Finally a bit of a break from the cycles of cold and snow :)

It's supposed to rain tomorrow and then get cold again over the weekend into next week (20s F). But it's been nice to go out without multiple layers, hood, gloves and scarf for a change.

It's 30 degrees here with snow flurries on and off. Yesterday we got about an inch of new snow with another winter storm due in Sunday afternoon into Monday. According to the weather reports, there are 2 systems heading our way - one coming in from the west and another coming up the coast. Bring it on!

Not sure of the temp - in the low 30's somewhere. We had a little more snow yesterday after it all being melted with the few Spring-like days over the weekend. Still mountains of snow in the parking lots where it had been plowed tho. Supposed to be back to nasty cold tomorrow, and another snow storm the first of next week. I'm a snow lover, but even I am getting tired of it this year. Sure beasts the oppressive heat and humidity of the summer, anytime! I'd like to order up just a happy medium between the two. :)

I think most people would agree with the "happy medium between the two." I love winter, though, yes, even now, and Paul prefers the "oppressive heat and humidity" any day!

Today was -25C and tonight we're supposed to hit -34C or lower-- that cold snap is back. A little much for most of us. It just saps the energy right out of everyone.
Heat and humidity does me right in even if I stay indoors with the a/c but I think I prefer that.
In between would be fantastic.
We still have tons of snow, today was blowing all day, visibility was nil, just hate driving in those conditions.

Now that we are BOTH retired - we need to get together one of these days. Just need to get my back taken care of first - then maybe we can plan something! :) I just saw on the Philly weather, that you could get 6-12 inches more snow on Monday. Hi Ellie! When, and if, this crazy weather breaks I'd love to make some plans. The latest weather report says it's 12 degrees here now, they're predicting 8" to 12" by the time the snow stops late Monday afternoon, and more snow on Thursday but the weatherguys aren't saying how much. The way the snow keeps on coming, maybe we should start training for the Itidarod.

Honestly here & when we get these kinds of temps in the Yukon, life just goes on as normal. A cold snap in either place can last weeks! Less outdoor activities, but my nieces caught the bus to school yesterday;my brother-in-law went to work(he works in the oil patch so outside!). I took the little girls to the swimming pool & out for lunch, met my oldest niece for a drink last night! It's -40 today & I'm helping one of my nieces move! I did have to borrow a gas truck, cuz my Dad's diesel truck was struggling to keep running! The diesel gels up in this kind of cold!

Absolutely - we'll get together in more predictable weather - and after my back surgery on 3/24 - then 6-8 weeks "mending". Late May or early June is usually nice weather in our neck of the woods - before I have to hibernate in the house with the a.c. on. :p

And that 1-3 inches of snow we were supposed to get here Sunday night/Monday, has now been updated to 6-10. Wonder what they'll be saying tomorrow - 10-15????? Don't ya just love these weather forecasters???? - every one says something different. We'll see how much snow we get, when it actually falls.

ETA: Didn't I tell you, Eileen??? The 6 o'clock news on Channel 6/Phila, is now saying 10-14 for south Jersey and all of DE. Seriously - I doubt we'll get anywhere near that amount..................

Freezing temps have been such a hassle down here, mainly because of our outside plants. Fortunately temps are trending upward in past week or so, maybe it's over for us. Dogs (Yorkies) didn't mind a bit, save for my rescue Navi (a Chi w/short hair) lots of shivering, but reason enough for more cuddling with her. I'm SO anxious for warmer weather.

A major disappointment to say the least! I'm hoping for another arctic blast that will permanently scare spring away - UGH! Many people get seasonal depression in the winter. I consistently get it in the spring and this has happened every spring for a lot of years, talked to my doctor about it but no physical cause was found.

It isn't cold at all here! In fact we even didn't have a "normal" winter....!
It only froze about 5 days (C°), and we didn't get a single bit of snow :(
The bad thing with this, is that almost no insects died, so I am afraid we will have much to many bugs this summer....!
Yesterday I saw a huge spider on the back porch....!
We have beautiful Spring weather now, with really lots of flowers in the garden, trees are getting new leaves, etc....!

Here in central NC, it's 70 today--beautiful. Now ask me again tomorrow/ night;is an Artic front on the way and Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun it's supposed to be COLD COLD. I dread having to put on coat, gloves, tobogan for my head. Takes so long to get ready to take the little ones outside. I like it - just don't like having to get the shoes and warm jacket on every time Wolfy decides he wants to go out. He's good tho - he can go forever before he has to "go". Every night it's at least 12 hours - goes out for the last time around 6:30 p.m. since he doesn't like being out too long in the dark, and my flashlight doesn't lite up the whole back 1.5 acres for him , so he doesn't lollygag around much, and then we don't go out till around 7 the next morning. Wow, we have had pouring rain most of the day, I awoke to the sound of it this morning, and it has been either raining or drown-pouring all day, so I knew it was above freezing! It is currently 38F (3C) with flood watch in effect until 11 p.m. tonight, but we are up on a hill, so the flood part doesn't really apply to us much! All the bodies of water are well downhill from us!

Like "momcat" said - BRRRR COLD in our neck of the woods. Coldest weather so far of this year's winter season, and feeling like it did last year at this time. But last year we had already had almost 2 feet of snow, but next to nothing so far this year. Had a coupe of inches yesterday, and also a couple about 2 weeks before Christmas - that's it so far.

The wind is making it feel even colder than it really is, and tomorrow is supposed to be even colder. I like the cold - just not the wind that sometimes goes along with it. It's supposed to warm to more normal temps by the weekend - in the 30's. We probably won't see Niagara Falls freeze like last year.

Wolfy LOVES the cold and the snow, and would stay out and run and romp - if only he could talk Mom into it!!!!! We were just outside for only about 5 minutes, and I had to drag him in. He was having a grand old time racing around like a crazy fool. :) I would stay out and let him play longer - but the wind is too much for this skinny pile of bones that has no fat on them to stay warm.

It was sooooooo cold when we went out at 6:30 this a.m. Thankfully, he has an extra large holding tank, and can seemingly go forever and not do anything in the house. He goes at least 12 hours from his last break at night - all the way to his first break the following morning. I'm just shaking my head reading these comments about SNOW and how cold your temps are or have been--amazing! I'm in central North Carolina and we have yet to have a real snow this season, just some flurries this winter. So far it has been a very mild winter here; we usually have at least one snow of 4"-6"inches-not feet (don't laugh) and/OR some bad sleets/freezing rain. I can't help but wonder if Feb & March are going to be the "real winter". I've had robins in the yard for two weeks and daffodils are poking their green tops up. I'm afraid the birds & flowers etc are going to think spring is here and then boom the cold temps and snow comes.

I hope all of you with lots of snow or rain will be ok.

Today it was an unseasonably warm 72 and broke a record set in 1925. The next 10 days are for 50's & 40's & back to 50's with some teens at night.

Karen

Karen
02-08-2015, 07:23 PM
Just got back inside, and feeling has returned to my fingers. I cleaned off the car for Paul to run an errand, and only a couple inches of snow had fallen, but it is bitter cold out there. It is amusing that the redacted low for tonight is 13°F, but by the time I cam back in, the temperature had dropped another degree to 10°F (-12°C), with a wind chill of -5°F(-21C). You'd think they'd have someone update the forecast to at least account for the fact that the temperature is already below the lowest low they predicted!

It's all powder now, as it is so cold, so when the wind gusts hit, everything drifts again. Of course the taller-than-me snowbanks are frozen pretty solid, so at least they are not moving!

mrspunkysmom
02-08-2015, 10:41 PM

It has been snowing all day here - since yesterday afternoon, actually, and is now about 14°F (-10°C) which is warmer than yesterday! The birds are very busy with the seed I put out!

From earlier today:

Monday mourning doves
Shelter from the storm on our
Dormant bicycles

The hush of snowfall
Is disturbed when I open
My blinds, let light in

Apologizing
I set out generous plates
Bird seed offering

Now they feast again
I sip my cooling tea, peace
On a stormy day

Cold?? What's that? Sometimes it's annoying living in California. We were recently hit with a "storm". The definition of storm here on the West Coast is rain.
We had some rain and actually a little wind last night. Ok, the wind was a problem for me (and Zeplyn). But nothing like what others are dealing with around the world.

Oh, and btw the temps are in the 60s! I do feel sorry for my PT family that is being hit hard with horrible weather. You are welcome to come out and visit me!! :)

Having lived in California (Northern) all my life and having visited Florida once, I'd choose California. Florida is just too humid/muggy for me.
We have cold weather (rarely, but sometimes) like when it was in the 20s and I found the Chihuahua on my porch. This winter was just dry and warm for some reason.

Even Southern California is always much warmer than the Bay Area (San Francisco) where I live. That's why we go to Disneyland in January. :)

Earlier today it was 6°F - and got all the way up to its current 13°F (-11°C) (wind chill at -3°F[-19C])

The media is all tizzy as we are predicted to get another blizzard this weekend, we'll see what happens, but the next town over, where my church is located, has already declared a parking ban for Saturday and Sunday, so unless that changes, I am betting church will be called off.

Yes, in these old New England town and cities, with streets laid out by following cow paths, dodging swaps, etc, long before civil engineering nd street planning was a "thing" end up banning on-street parking for storms, simply so they can plow safely. The streets are already much narrowed by the [previous storms' snowbanks, and they are running out of places to put the excess! Running errands today, I ended up waiting for 5 minutes as a guy in a Fedex truck stopped in the middle of the street, put on his flashers and delivered a package - thank heavens he apparently didn't need a signature! There was nowhere for him to pull over or off the road, and the road was down o=to one land of navigable space.

I got a call less than an hour ago, my own city, Waltham, is having a parking ban staring at ten p.m. Saturday night, but they at least list alternative places for folks to park if they need it!

chocolatepuppy
02-13-2015, 08:29 PM
In my little town, they have street signs (that are up all year)warning you not to park on the street when there is any accumulation of snow.
This is because they will be plowing the streets.

The snow started falling a couple hours ago, we are supposed to get 12" to 14" or more, or less, depending on what station you listen to. There's not much wind yet, that's supposed to come later, and the storm will intensify overnight. The little birds (juncos and sparrows) cleaned off two plates of seed from late this morning, I put out more. I haven;t seen the mourning doves yet, they may be sheltering in the hedge until they have to eat!

Church tomorrow has been cancelled, so has a lot of everything else in this end of the state! The bigger weather news is after the storm, the temps are supposed to drop like a rock, it is now 21°F (-13C) but is supposed to drop below zero Sunday night into Monday, with winds making it feel like -25 to -35°F (-32 to -36C).

What a night! The wind blew hard (at times 50 mph near me) all night long and today to be 20 mph. The lights flickered but managed to stay on here but some are without power. At last we're to get SNOW and/or a mix Monday night and Tuesday. The high for the next four days is 28 or so. Right now it is 14 and with wind it feels like -2. We will not be outside very long with the little girls. George loves it though; he loves to run in the wind.

Later today I'll get a big bag of sunflower seeds for the birds. I have some but not enough. Hope everybody stays safe.... Kay in NC

Glad you are all safe! And that you still have power, that's always a worry with wind storms, no matter the temperatures.

It is still snowing and blowing here, hard too tell how much we have gotten, but it looks like the snow has reached the spot on the little tree where the trunk splits into 2 branches, so there must be at least about 4 feet of snow back there!

The intense cold has not hit yet, we are all the way up to 18°F(-7 C) out there!

Indy had those high winds yesterday. Every time I opened the back door to let the dogs out, the wind nearly blew the back door off. I had to grip the doorknob

Under my boots and around my toes
The frost that bit the ground below
It was a hundred degrees below zero

And my mama cried
And my mama cried
Nanook, a-no-no
Nanook, a-no-no
Don't be a naughty Eskimo
Save your money, don't go to the show

Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh
Well I turned around and I said oh, oh oh
Well I turned around and I said ho, ho
And the northern lights commenced to glow
And she said, with a tear in her eye
Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow

Does this answer the question? Yes, those are all footy prints in the snow - squirrels. birds, and even Ilsa - a baby bunny that has been coming by lately - we've only seen her once, but she often leaves tracks!

Okay, technically, it is relatively warm, +19°F but the sun does not reach that spot, just the wind!

I live at the bottom of a gradual hill and the road goes up across and down again, The most entertaining thing is to watch cars TRY to navigate up and over.

A red dually truck came by fishtailing it's way up the hill, he finally had to make a U and come back down.

I started to come inside when the lady next door came around the corner, so we BOTH stood there and laughed at him.

How cold is it where I am?

-----

The local government has held new pressers to keep people informed as to what services - snow removal, plowing and schools - are being affected.

There has been no school since last Friday and the school superintendent has been at the broadcasts letting parents know there is no school scheduled for the next few days.

One day she asked the kids 'to read anything' while they were at home.

Yesterday, she said something about "mukluks".

As the Mayor came back to the lectern, he looked around and said, "I don't know what 'mukluks' are....."

Back at the TV station, the anchors said, "MUKLUKS?"

They cut back to the Mayor and when his spiel was over, the male anchor said, "I looked up 'mukluks' and all I found was something about a seal skinned Eskimo boot!".

-----

I was laughing my butt off during all of this and yelling at the screen, "MUKLUKS ARE COLD WEATHER BOOTS!!!"

Here I am, a SoCal kid, grew up in 70 degree, year round weather and I knew what 'mukluks' are?

That is how cold it is!!!!!!;)

I'm in central NC and we are not accustomed to such cold temps. On Monday of this week we had 1"snow then sleet and freezing rain on top of it and because it's been so cold, we still have the frozen white mixture in part of our long drive that is in the shade. It felt like it was above freezing this afternoon, so I spent some time carving the snow bank back before the next storm came, and gained 2 more feet of parking room for my car.
