Redd the Fancy Mouse, the Pet of the Day
Name: Redd
Age: Three months old
Gender: Male
Kind: Fancy mouse
Home: Brooks, Alberta, Canada

Redd comes from a petstore. Our local rescues do not take rodents as they have so many cats and dogs and the little animals get extremely stressed, so rescue is not an option for me. At the store, he was in with other males, and they chewed on him, injured him, and left him unable to have babies. The store knows me, and knows I love mice and take good care of them, so he became mine.

Therefore for his mental health, he lives with three females. He is a very sweet boy, a bit underweight but his big heart makes up for this. He is very gentle with his adopted sisters, they sometimes squeak thinking he wants to mate, but he ignores this. He is not aggressive at all. Often I find him in the little add on their cage features buried by the three girls. He does not mind being kissed and is very tolerant of gentle stroking. He loves to climb wires, and run on the wheel he shares with the girls.

He is what is called a brindle; orange with darker hair in places that can change through his life. At first he was hesitant to touch treats such as pumpkin seeds, but now with the girls he has learned they are yummy. He is a very timid boy, but very sweet. He will sniff me if I make kissy noises in his face and wet my lips with his nose. Mice have wet noses just like most other animals including dogs and cats. He melts my heart. I don't know his actual age as he is quite petite, but my estimate is three months.

The girls are overall gentle with him, keeping him well groomed and smelling lovely. He smells like some kind of nut, between grooming himself and the girls fussing over him he is an extra clean mouse. He is a gentle soul, and when he takes treats through the bars he does it so gently and carefully I could take the treat back from him if I wanted to. He loves to hide in tight enclosed spaces, such as the boxes I put in their out of cage play area or the various bottles and things I also put there for mouse benefit. He's not a very fast mouse, and is rather calm even when trying to evade being caught. I love this little man to pieces, he is such a sweet, lovable little furball.
