I
got Starlight two years ago in April as a 'well broke' horse, only a few
days before my birthday. She came with another horse, which is my sister's
very expensive horse. Starlight was just a quick throw in to our deal we got,
she ended up only costing us around $400. She was trained normally, and was
very uninterested in me when she arrived. The day we got Starlight we put her
in with our Icelandic Stallion, hoping to get a baby out of her. Starlight is
basically my first horse, my family had one that I played with, but we sold
her the year before getting Starlight.
Starlight just saw me as another girl who came into her life, used her a bit
and got rid of her. But, I was never going to leave her! I taught her
liberty, and Parelli, getting closer and closer to her each day, we had our
moments, she woke up on the wrong side of the pen and decided to be bad, she
tested me, she taught me, and I continued to ask her to work with me.
There's been days where Starlight would run from me in the pen, telling me I
did something wrong the day before. I would finally convince her to stop
running, then I would take her out, and forget about working with her and
just let her graze, which made her happy! I've figured out that Starlight is
a great jumping horse! I go on trail rides with her every day with my
siblings, a lot of times I would have to get off and work with her when she
stopped listening to me. Then, in the late winter I had to stop riding her
since she was far along in her pregnancy. I would still go out to the pasture
and spend time with her, petting her very large belly!!
Then, May 5th, Starlight gave birth in the early morning to a little adorable
bay half Icelandic Filly baby! I named her Stella since that meant Star in
Icelandic! Starlight and Stella are my best friends now! Starlight's been the
best experience for me! I can't imagine life without her! She's made me
realize that you don't need to buy the most expensive horse to get a good
relationship. I don't need ribbons to prove how great she is, I just ride to
have fun and to be with her! :).
