Hello,
my name is Earl Slidell. I am the most interesting rabbit in the
world! I am originally from Slidell, LA. When Hurricane Katrina hit (August
29, ten years ago now) I was one of many animals who were rescued from the
wreckage after the storm. I was in very bad shape! Fortunately a kind rescuer
helped me, and then I was evacuated from the area by a rabbit rescue group.
The picture of me on the blue striped rug was taken my first day here in
Alabama. I was very tired. My fosterer fell in love with my crazy Cajun
personality, especially after I jumped into her bathroom sink on my first
night home, and she decided I should live with her permanently. She and her
husband are now my staff people and help me with my housekeeping and my
Facebook page. They love me very much - but how could they not love such a
fabulous rabbit as myself?!
I am now ten years old and the memory of Katrina is far behind me, although
to this day I do not like storms. For many years I didn't want to settle
down. I like all the ladies! But several years ago I finally met the girl who
stole my heart, and I am now bonded with the lovely Miss Callie. She is quite
a spicy dish, and she has been spayed, too! Together we like to rip up
cardboard, throw our toss toys at each other, celebrate Mardi Gras, and
rearrange our litter boxes.
Callie is more of an indoor girl, but I like to take my staff for walkies
sometimes. I have a "Who Dat" leash which my staff bought in New Orleans for
me. Even though I live in 'Bama I am still a Saints fan! I am sorry to say I
have caused three car accidents while out walking. Apparently I have
distracted drivers with my stylish pink walking jacket. So now I am only
allowed to be out in the back yard, where I won't distract any one.
And now I have a serious message. I was very lucky to be rescued after
Katrina but many animals are not as lucky as me. Please be prepared for
natural disasters and other emergencies by having a plan ready for how to
care for your pet. I really recommend microchipping your animal so that you
can be reunited more easily if you are separated after a disaster. I have a
microchip now, and so does Callie. It is very important!
