Early Morning Trip to the Vet

Bella decided to eat a wood chip this morning. We had a LARGE tree removed yesterday and even though the men cleaned up the area real well Bella found a couple of wood chips to chew on last night. I got them out of her mouth and then I got out there with my rake and thought I had gotten every last piece of debris. This morning she was gagging and looking very much in distress. She tried to vomit and only about 3-4 little Eukanuba morsels came up. She kept looking like she had something that was caught halfway up and halfway down. We rushed to the vet and he said there is nothing in her throat now but it may be in her stomach and what to look for if it should cause a blockage (vomiting, straining). Said it would be 24-48 hrs. before we noticed anything. Also told me to feed her rice and corn to help it through.

I am sure she will be OK but I will be watching her like a hawk! They also mentioned that lots of dogs are coming in sick from eating mulch. Apparently now mulch is not always totally organic. Some manufacturers are putting in chemicals to kill bugs. Just a tip for my fellow Pet Talkers. Watch out for the mulch.

Well I'm off to work now. Better late than never. It's killing me to leave my little Bella today.

I was almost too afraid to read this topic. Poor Bella I know all too well what a worried state you must be in, Pam. Reece and I wish we lived closer so we could go check on the little girl for you. I'm sure everything will pass through just like Reece's did. And if anything goes wrong, I'm sure you'll notice it and have her to the vet in no time. We gotta teach these poodles they can't eat whatever they want!

Oh there are too many sick pups around here! Poor Bella, kisses for you, sweetie! Stay away from that mulch! I bet you have more toys than you know what to do with. Chew on them, okay?

Oh, no, I just stopped worrying about Reece. Now I've got to gear up again. I'm the expert worrier here. It's my calling. Pam keep us informed on what goes in and what comes out. Hannah sends kisses to the little Bella pup.

Is it a full moon or something? My goodness!! Everyone has had such a rough time the last week or so, and here I've been just floating around on Cloud 9...new job, Butter and Mimi tolerating each other, Honey and Lilly behaving (until yesterday), and I just thought all was right with the world.

Pam, I'm so sorry for your scary experience. And I am SO glad Bella is ok.

Enough of this, people and puppies!!!

Thanks everyone for your concern. I think Bella just has a thing for wood!! Remember the clothespin incident! She seems to be acting fine. Things are going in and coming out. I was out in the yard again right before dinner searching and searching for anything that she could find that would be dangerous but couldn't find a thing. Just told hubby if there is one thing out there in the whole yard she will find it.

Today was the vet's surgery day but he fit me in before he started operating. While we were there the cutest black lab puppy named Bruno came in to "get snipped" as Phred would say. I had to laugh to myself as I was sitting there and thinking of Phred and Smoke and that whole saga. You guys are always on my mind!

I really wanted to warn you guys about the mulch too. I hadn't known about that.

Pam so glad that Bella is doing better.

I have a question for everybody.
By mulch could those be also the
would chips that you buy in a bag for
    landscaping too? I have a
a Japanese garden that I made,
and I used the chips to make a path-way.
I also bought and used a bunch of top soil that was purchased in store bought bags.
I wonder if the top soil is treated as
    well as the wood chips?
Never even crossed my mind they might
    have chemicals.

Kys...I don't really know the answer to your question. I would think the top soil would be safe but you never know. I know that cedar mulch is advertised as repelling bugs but I don't know if anything has been added. I know if I was going to buy mulch I would certainly read the bag and ask the person at the nursery for any information on what's inside. Before even taking their word, though, I would probably try and see what the manufacturer says, either via an e-mail or just jotting off a letter. Can't take chances with our furkids!
