SACRAMENTO, CA - Cal Expo police shot a cow that broke free at the state fairgrounds Tuesday morning.

According to fair officials, UC Davis veterinarian staff were unloading a pregnant cow in the livestock area when the bovine broke free and headed toward the fairgrounds.

Cal Expo police were able to contain the animal in a tunnel but before she could be tranquilized, officials said she got free and into the fairgrounds.

Police cornered her in front of the Golden One stage where they said she charged an officer and fearing for his life, officers shot her.

No one else was injured in the incident which occurred before the fair opened to visitors at noon.

How terrible, you'd think they'd give officers assigned to a state fair a little training for this sort of incident! ( I know, wishful thinking ...)
