Hamster Help!!! :eek:

I have 2 dwarf hamsters named Lucy and Ethele. Ethel is Lucy's mom and she is an albino. Lucy is brown and white! I got them when they were already adults though. Can you guess who they are named after? Any way they keep on scratching and I read in a book that corn can make a hamster itch! So I stopped giving them any corn but they are still itching! Does anybody know what I should do?

What kind of litter are you using for them?? the pine shavings, if you are using that, will maybe make them itch. I have rats and i don't use that pine shavings anymore. it's bad for their respiratory systems. I get this litter that is made from recycled newspaper (Yesterdays News) and i don't hardly clean out their cages at all. Maybe once a month or longer.
I have read that the pine shavings will have mites and stuff in there so maybe that will solve your probelm.

Pine & cedar can cause respiratory infections as well as other problems in hamster and rats. Aspen can be used, it's not made in the same way, a lot of us use it for the softness and out rats LOVE the stuff for burrowing and making nests with it. The paper stuff makes my rats sneeze so much it's not worth it for continual trips to the Vets for checks ups for them. With the paper products they need to be cleaned a lot more, it tends to hold in the ammonia in more, which is bad for their respiratory system as well. For me it's much more worth a cleaner cage, and healthier rat to go with what they LOVE, so I went with the Aspen Particle, and haven't been happier that they are happy
