OHHHH BOY!! This is right up my alley. I'm an English major and poetry is my FAV!! I'm actually applying for a job w/ Hallmark cards. If I'm ever in a position where I can develop my own line of cards...I'm keeping you guys and your furbabies in mind!!
Ok, forgive me, this isn't a limerick but an ode... I wrote this for a children's poetry class that I took.
ODE TO SARA THE BOXER
A blur of brindle-
Slow brain,
Fast feet,
Quicker tongue.
Slobbering happy mass
Clumsily chasing cats
Not to hurt
But to agitate.
In the house:
Expert cat courser,
Impatietn beggar,
Toy toter,
Underwear theif,
Mischief maker.
On the waxed floor:
The grace of a bulldozer.
In the backyard:
She digs,
Barks at shadows,
Yawns at winged intruders,
Buries biscuits,
Eats rosebushes, daisies, worms, and her water bowl,
Chews house, fence, boat, trampoline.
Jumps tall fences, small buildings
Only to be scolded.
In her doghouse:
Lays
Halfway in-
Halfway out,
On top of
Blankets,
Grass,
Dirt,
Her squeaky toys.
On the leash:
Sixty pounds
Pulling,
Straining,
Choking,
Dragging me behind.
She will heel
Only a second
Possibly two--
Too many sights,
Smells,
Wonders,
And cats.
Floppy ears,
Liquid eyes.
White muzzle and paws
Covered in earth.
Pink tongue
Longing for remnants
Of leftover snacks.
Stout, sinewy body,
Hard muscle mass
Tense,
Eager to bound and leap.
Short tail,
Shorter attention span.
Cold nose,
Warm heart.
