Yuppers, I am 100% positive it was a common. We don't have alligators in Wisconsin. My dad pulled it out of the water to have a look, it looked like this: (of course we put it back in the water).



Come to think about it, the turtle was about that size too. Its shell was completely covered in moss. Ok, so maybe it wasn't 80- but it had to be pretty old, it was huge.
