Popcornbird is right. Any new pet coming in to a household deseves a vet check. ALL of my pets see a vet for a checkup either annually (reptiles) or biannually (rodents), and my dog and cat see the vet about three times a year. (Well, my dog is very accident prone, but that's a different story.....)
It's just a good idea to get things checked out. Most pets do their very best to disguise any signs of illness. Because of this, often people don't notice that their pet is sick until the illness is very far along.
You say the bird you have now has never been to the vet. Fine. What if he DID get sick and need veterinary care? Would you be able to provide for him? If he were sick or injured and needed $300 of treatment could you provide it? Would you?
